To ask what time your 16 yo/year 12s, go to bed?

DS 16 has always needed a lot of sleep. This year his bedtime has been extended. He now sometimes naps before dinner in the evening. I feel this means his bedtime should be earlier. How many hours sleep/what bedtime do your teens have?

My 16 year old and 15 year old haven’t had a set bedtime for years!

If they are tired, they go to bed earlier and self regulate as they are practising for being grown ups!

Does he have any additional needs?

UrsulaPandress · 13/09/2019 08:40

I know she used to stay up late getting homework finished.

Gatehouse77 · 13/09/2019 08:40

At 12 ours went to bed at 8:30pm, at 16 10pm.

Now they're older they go up earlier!

Fivebeanchilli · 13/09/2019 09:21

Neither my 14 nor 16 year old have a set bedtime because they're pretty good at self regulating. Both tend to be in bed by around 10.30; the 14 year old will go earlier a couple of nights a week. They get up at 7.

My Y11 doesn't have a set time, but will normally try to be in bed by 10 during the week - she needs her sleep. She has early evening activities most nights, so is often doing homework up until she goes to bed.

MyY13 often doesn't go to bed until 2. He is appalling at time management, and nothing we do seems to help. He leaves homework far too late, and then stays up until the small hours to get it done. Not ideal, but nothing else seems to work. At 18, I think it is really down to him, but I do get very cross if he wakes us when he is finally going to bed.

Both are meant to be up at 6.45-7 in order to catch trains/buses.

I imagine my 15yo would laugh at me if I told her it was bedtime.. I have absolutely no idea what time she goes to sleep.

By 16 I had travelled abroad alone, was in a serious relationship, had a child, and was living out of home. I mean I don’t really recommend any of that to your average 16yo but a bed time is pretty laughable...

Logjam · 12/12/2019 08:53

They do not have a bedtime. Generally everyone goes to bed before 11pm. Buggers were still up at 5:30 at the weekend! They have to learn - I honestly believe these 2 years before they are 18 and will hopefully fly the nest to University is training time - a safe place to make bad decisions and learn from them.

Sammi38 · 12/12/2019 08:54

Dd is 16, she goes to bed when she wants, normally around 10 on college days, a bit later weekends.

Ohyesiam · 12/12/2019 08:56

My 16 year old year 11 dd goes to bed before my night owl 12 year old ds.

pourmeanotherglass · 12/12/2019 08:57

15 and 17 year olds normally in their rooms by 9:30-10ish, and lights are normally off when I come upstairs at 11ish. Both have alarms go off around 7 am.

MsChnandlerBong · 12/12/2019 08:57

I am very surprised by a 16 year old having a bedtime!

Saucery · 12/12/2019 09:00

I gave up arguing about a reasonable time to go to bed at around 15. Yes, there were ridiculously late nights and some horrendous days when he was so tired he couldn’t function, but that taught him to balance his sleep needs in a sensible manner far better than me standing over him pointing at the clock.
