To go on holiday when 21 weeks pregnant?

My partner and I are looking to go on holiday in a few weeks time as I have the week off work and we've never been abroad together so would like to make the most of it before baby arrives!

So my question is, did anybody fly during pregnancy? It would only be short haul so approximately 2/3 hours and my pregnancy has been low risk so far.

I just can't help but think if something went wrong I wouldn't be able to live with myself but my partner thinks I'm being overly cautious!

Yeah why wouldn’t you? At 21 weeks you’re barely half way through the pregnancy you’ll be fine.
I flew several times in both my pregnancies and flew home 36 weeks pregnant with my 2nd (that was the limit for the airline and my insurance)

21 weeks is fine! I flew short haul at 30 weeks pregnant.

Go and enjoy, it will be your last relaxing holiday for a while!

Thankyou for the replies!

Will the air pressure not affect the baby then?

I probably sound mental but I've miss carried before so I'm being very cautious.

You are fine to fly when pregnant I think the travel restrictions airlines place is purely to stop women giving birth on flights rather than for health reasons.
I went to a festival at 20 weeks pregnant, not a nice one, a scungy festival and slept on the floor etc.
Have a great holiday.

Stickybeaksid · 12/09/2019 07:39

Have you never seen a pregnant person away on holidays before? Totally normal

Deadheadstickeronacadillac · 12/09/2019 07:40

After 15 miscarriages I flew long haul (10 hours) when 23 weeks. Holiday was booked 6 months before falling pregnant (pregnancy was a massive surprise).
Was suffering severe HG, but baby was fine, I just slept in the flight.
You and bubs will be fine...go and enjoy!

mrspotatohed · 12/09/2019 07:42

I'm going away and flying back alone at 27 weeks, approx 3.5hrs flight 😀

IfYouWannaComeBack · 12/09/2019 07:46

Ahhh I can see why you’re worrying considering your previous circumstances.
Honestly you’ll be fine. Enjoy your holiday!
I think relaxing on a beach will do the baby some good too Wink

AlwaysCheddar · 12/09/2019 07:47

Make sure you have travel insurance

MyNameIsIrrelevant · 12/09/2019 07:48

You'll be fine. Baby will be fine.
I wouldn't have but I had serious HG, you know how your feeling so it's up to you.

stucknoue · 12/09/2019 07:50

It's fine, just check your travel insurance covers you. i travelled long haul at that stage though it was back to the U.K. for a holiday so I didn't need to worry about medical costs.

BiddyPop · 12/09/2019 07:59

I flew long haul (10 hours) at 12 and 13 weeks, and lots of short haul until 32(+3) weeks (official “no more flying” cutoff was 32 weeks but I had to get back from a week long meeting on the continent).

No problems (except bursting into tears on takeoff on the last flight - hormonal reaction to the realization that this part of my life was never going to happen the same again as I wouldn’t be able to head off to week-long meetings).

At 20-24 weeks or so, I had a couple of trips and they were nearly the best as I wasn’t too big to be comfortable and didn’t need the loo every 5 minutes but had a little bump showing so people tended to be kind.

WhyBirdStop · 12/09/2019 08:03

I went on a hiking holiday in Portugal at 28 weeks, and was flying short haul regularly for work, get some flight socks, and keep yourself hydrated. If you've got a noticeable bump expect to be body scanned at the airport. The fourth time it happened I asked the guard doing it why it was everytime when I travelled a lot before and rarely got scanned, and he said 'got to make sure it's a real bump and not drugs'!

Kay1341 · 12/09/2019 08:04

I was away on a work conference in Denmark at 27 weeks and holiday in Barcelona at 14 weeks, all was fine. Just make sure you have travel insurance /EHIC card etc depending on what you need. Flying or being away won't harm the baby, but you can have complications when away just like you could whilst being at home.

Unknownanon · 12/09/2019 08:08

Yes it was the best time to fly as i was finally feeling human again. Take your ehic card if Europe and scrutinise for good travel insurance as well as packing your maternity note just in case. Flight socks and tena knickers if you Leak too.

The only thing i will warn is that for same reason when pregnant mosquitoes loved me. Even with repellent i was bitten loads so take lots of good repellent, bands and afterbite!

Mandraki · 12/09/2019 08:10

I flew at 20 weeks, all fine, she's two now and she doesn't remember a thing

1ToughCookie · 12/09/2019 08:14

My baby loved the flight I took at 25 weeks. Take off and turbulence was non-stop play time both ways. Then there were children chatting and yelling (it was the weekend before Easter), and baby moved a lot during their excitement too.

I made sure I had a EHIC card since I was going UK to EU, and wanted to ensure I could use local medical services easily should it be needed. It wasn't, but it was nice to feel reassured. (Not that any local medical professionals would deny service to a pregnant lady on vacation!)

I'm like you with history--previous MC, severe sickness in first tri. I had 0 issues while on vacation. Even was pleasantly surprised that the spa tub at the hotel was kept at 38C, so I could enjoy it at no risk of overheating!
