To think DD's heel pain isn't growing pains?

Natsku · 12/09/2019 05:43

The bottom of DD's heel has been hurting for a few weeks in one foot, and the other foot started hurting a week ago, whenever she is walking for long. It's not hurting a lot but that kind of annoying nagging pain level.

She went to see the school nurse about it (who is an actual nurse, not just a normal member of staff with first aid training so I would generally trust her opinion) and she had a look and said she thinks it's just growing pains. I was under the impression that growing pains are something that occur at night, in the leg, not in the feet when active. I just checked her health record and the plan is to wait and see if the pain goes away or changes which might be the right idea but also might not surely?

It's probably Severs Disease (google it).

Plantar fasciitis?

LMW1990 · 12/09/2019 05:57

I work in the orthopaedic department at a major teaching hospital (I'm not medically trained though I hasten to add). I'm responsible for the admin of the departmental paediatric physiotherapist. This could be a number of things, including those listed above. A common problem in children is flexible flat feet which may require orthotics. I would go to GP and ask for a referral. Any questions please feel free to DM me.

Yes sounds like Sever's. Dd has this, it is related to growing but not growing pains. Lots of stretches helped her.

My son had similar symptoms, plus pain in his thighs when walking long distances (over 5 or 6 miles).
We took him to a podiatrist who fitted him with orthotics which seem to have resolved the problem

I'm a physio that used to work in assistive aids. My first instinct it sever's disease. It's related to growing and common with active children.

Ds had Severs when he was a kid and I have had Plantar Fasciitis as an adult. It sounds like one of the two (probably Severs). Ibuprofen is helpful in both cases. Severs requires staying off her feet and Plantar Fasciitis can be helped with exercises.

The treatment is individually made insoles and stretches.

Sever's disease

Natsku · 12/09/2019 06:11

Looked up Sever's disease and that seems to fit, she has some pain in the calf muscles too according to the health report (she didn't mention it to me). I've been giving paracetamol for the pain but I'll switch to ibuprofen and call for a doctor appointment, no idea how long it'll take to get one though.
