To think people should not comment on how quickly I walk into work.

In the space of two weeks I have had two people who work in the same building as me but whom I don't know comment that I walk into the building slowly. This has never happened to me in my life and I think it's nobody's business how quickly I walk into work. The first was a man who commented that ' I should be bounding into work'. The second commented that she thought 'I was going to stop and did I need a push'. I commented back that I had pulled a hamstring which I have.

**Some very weird comments here. Your colleagues are commenting on your body. It's weird!

They are not though are they? They are not commenting on her body, but the fact she's walking slowly. The one about bounding into work, surely most people would reply with ajokey comment? It comes across that way to me, and the other one comes across as rude..some pepole are.

If the op is walking noticeably slower, and works in a small enough environment for people to notice, then there is a chance people will comment. It's not commenting on her body...when people have said similar to me, I either ignore if the are being idiotic, or briefly explain. They are not commenting on my body, but either registering surprise as the last time they saw me I was fine, or expressing concern. Both of which are perfectly natural.

Of all the comments on the thread, I think this is the weirdest!

AllUnderControll · 12/09/2019 08:06

People used to say to me 'I saw you striding along' to x - it's weird how some people need to say this stuff.

woodchuck99 · 12/09/2019 08:09

YANBU. I have a disability which tends to be hidden unless I am tired or have already walked a bit of a distance and I hate it when people comment on my walking. I have had complete strangers ask me what I have "done to my legs" which is so rude. I can spend the whole day feel down afterwards and wondering if I am getting worse.

BossAssBitch · 12/09/2019 08:10

Really, OP? Here, have a grip...

woodchuck99 · 12/09/2019 08:11

Can't stand people walking slow for no reason. Just because they have all the time in the world, doesn't mean they have to get in the way and slow everybody down.

You don't know if it is for "no reason " though do you? They may have a reason but it is none of your business.

womaninthedark · 12/09/2019 08:20

Ignore. People want to walk faster, let them?

KUGA · 12/09/2019 08:25

Ask them where the speed cameras are and are they the speed police.

Dyrne · 12/09/2019 08:31

Commenting on disabilities is awful, but at least one of the comments in the OP is a joke about work. The “bounding into work” one is surely more a joke of “ha ha we should all be eager to get to work, yeah right” rather than a comment on walking slowly? It invites a response of “you should see me sprinting out of here at home time!”

Ohbuggerlugs · 12/09/2019 08:37

I’m opposite I’ve had people shouting at me about how fast I walk 😂😬 (in a encouraging WTAF way) and I do walk fast, I’m 5’3 and my legs just run away with me I probably look ridiculous but I get places quicker!

womaninthedark · 12/09/2019 08:39

Work on your cold stare.

toadabode · 12/09/2019 08:41

Such a boring post

Zaphodsotherhead · 12/09/2019 08:41

I don't think it's disablist, because, like Ohbugger, I get people commenting on how fast I walk.

They are just making conversation. It's equally horrible if someone from work sees you walking in and doesn't say a single word, you wonder what you've done to upset them, are they ignoring you/cutting you?

So they are a bit damned if they do and damned if they don't. The only alternative is to mention the weather, and that gets tedious quickly too.

Alexel · 12/09/2019 08:50

Loool nothing worse than someone slow infront of you or almost stopping when you're trying to get into the office. If they don't have crutches I make comments because I don't want to be at work but I have to, I want to get in there ASAP, and get out ASAP.
Idk if someone has commented on how fast I walk. Idc enough.

woodchuck99 · 12/09/2019 08:55

I don't think it's disablist, because, like Ohbugger, I get people commenting on how fast I walk.

That's entirely different though as if people comment on how fast you walk they are not complaining and they are not likely to push past you because as stated above "they can't stand people walking slowly for no reason".
If you want to make conversation with an acquaintance or stranger you should stick to things that don't potentially involve a medical condition.

Not everyone who is disabled uses crutches. Why should people explain their reason for walking slowly. Stop being so ignorant.

user1493494961 · 12/09/2019 08:58

I agree with pp, get a grip, they are just making conversation. People seem to want to make issues of the slightest things nowadays.

lostelephant · 12/09/2019 09:04

Oh get a grip, lighthearted or not it's such a non-issue. I can't believe you've made the effort to post about it.

Alexel · 12/09/2019 09:33

@woodychuck

Don't be ignorant Flowers

BloodyDisgrace · 12/09/2019 10:25

You could say: "Hop on then! Show me how it's to be done and I might consider your approach!" Condescending buggers.
You should learn a quick reaction, a repartee. Then any fucker can say any fuck they want but you'll zap them on the spot and see their face. They'll think twice next time :)

MollyButton · 12/09/2019 11:26

I can see why you are irritated - and personally I think its on a par with the "gives us a smile" comments.
I might bring it up to HR in passing, as it does seem to show a certain intolerance.
