We are currently in debt totalling to around £20k, they’re manageable and are overpaid each month but I can’t help but worry. Our mortgage is to a family member who bought our house for us and we pay x amount each month. I always get really anxious Incase I lost my job etc which I know I won’t but it’s always there at the back of my mind! How much is a normal amount of debt now days?

5.5k on the credit cards as of today only because we've paid off the balance of our holiday. We already have the sum in our account to clear the balance by DD at the end of the month.
I love my credit card and use it all the time, I have learned the hard way to be sensible with it though and always pay the balance in full.
I'm now too risk averse to take out too much credit without the means to repay quickly.

User3468793 · 11/09/2019 23:40

About £100K left on the mortgage, total amount was originally 250K. Currently have 75K in pre-tax money, 35K in savings and 30K in bitcoin (lol, though obviously the last one could easily be nothing in a few months). Hoping to pay off at least half the remaining mortgage once the tax year is over and I know what's actually left to spend.

Credit card limit is 20K however that's automatically paid off at the end of the month by direct debit. Currently spending nowhere near that amount though! (Usually 200-400 a month)

BeepBeeeep · 11/09/2019 23:50

Mortgage was paid off around 15 years ago. No debt. I have a credit card which has been gathering dust in my purse. It expired a couple of months ago totally unused.

Curious2468 · 11/09/2019 23:52

100ish on mortgage (about 25-30% of house value). No other debt

Africa2go · 12/09/2019 00:00

I agree that just listing debt doesnt really give a true picture. We have about £8k on an interest free credit card - mainly holiday we've just had. Will pay it off over next 12 months and do the same next year.

£10k car finance.

£300k mortgage, 15 years to go (I'll be 60).

No real savings but have decent pensions & quite a bit of equity in the house.

strivingtosucceed · 12/09/2019 01:32

0 in debt, 10k in savings, hoping to buy my first house this time next year!!! I'm aiming for a 200k house so should be in about 180k debt once fees, furniture are paid for.

WombOfOnesOwn · 12/09/2019 01:34

United States, mortgage is $275,000, plus $120,000 in student loan debt. This is AFTER making payments for a number of years on the student loans. I will be in debt for the next 25 years, paid off when I am in my 60s.

transformandriseup · 12/09/2019 04:54

£6.5k on our car. It should be paid in 4 years but I’m hoping for less.

Plus our mortgage of £120k

Moanranger · 12/09/2019 05:03

OP try to save money every month, that would cushion any loss of employment income. Calculate your debt to equity ratio from time to time, that should reassure you. Mortgage payments reduce debt & increase equity. Make a budget, and include debt in it.
Forego unnecessary spending until out of debt.
I am a high earner, but I Shop budget, second hand, charity shop, and go on a 1 week holiday per year. I like a bargain.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 12/09/2019 05:11

Mortgage is about 1.5 times DH & I joint earnings. It was double that and we've slogged to overpay/set any bonuses and windfalls against it. I won't say the exact amount because it's high compared to some of the numbers on here - we live in pricey commuter town in the south east. I don't worry too much about it as we have a lot of equity, mortgage is prob about 25/30% LTV.

We have no other debt. I can't stand car finance in particular so we drive a relatively modest car compare to a lot of people. We use credit cards for online/large purchases etc to benefit from the protection, but pay off immediately.

CupoTeap · 12/09/2019 05:13

No debt, no mortgage.

ImogenTubbs · 12/09/2019 05:14

I have similar debt to you OP and am also reliant on being able to work and earn to pay it off. I'm working on become better protected though! DH and I had a life event a couple of years ago that involved us spending all our savings although we do have good equity across a couple of properties if worst came to worst (although currently this is going towards our retirement!)

elprup · 12/09/2019 05:38

Around £6.5k of debt here - trying to pay it off in £500 per month installments but it’s tough.

Lightsabre · 12/09/2019 05:51

When you say your mortgage is to a family member, is the house in your name?

StepAwayFromGoogle · 12/09/2019 06:09

£190k mortgage (which is high considering PPs), about £2000 on credit card from maternity leave. No savings apart from pension. Yes, it makes me panic too sometimes, OP.

PooWillyBumBum · 12/09/2019 06:44

£173k mortgage but we overpay so hoping to clear within 4-5 years.

Student loan which I ignore and treat like a tax...interest much lower than I make on ISA and pensions.

A few hundred or thousand on credit cards every month, we pay the balance off every month and just use it to collect points. Always have at least 10 times more in the bank than I owe on card.

Almost bought another house this month so we were approved for a £376k mortgage. Glad we didn’t take it now. If one of us loses our jobs we can still manage easily.

Penners99 · 12/09/2019 06:48

£325 on Visa. Nothing else

RiddleyW · 12/09/2019 06:49

500k on the mortgage which is pretty horrifying but no other debt.

redchocolatebutton · 12/09/2019 06:50

no debt as such, but 150£ or so on credit card which will be paid off in full automatically on the first of next month.

mortgage - a lot higher than I would like, but have a savings plan where I can take out money without penalties next year and a chunk will be used to overpay the mortgage.

adaline · 12/09/2019 06:50

50k on the mortgage.

No other debt. We're early-mid thirties.

Shouldibeworriedaboutthis · 12/09/2019 06:52

£38k left on mortgage and just under £4k on a credit card. About £4k left on our HP too.

It doesn’t bother me in the slightest. I don’t know why people are so holier than thou about not having debt/credit. It’s something to use to your advantage.

vintagesewingmachine · 12/09/2019 06:53

No debt. Mortgage is paid off. Own our cars outright. Credit card paid in full every month. Savings in the bank/ ISA. We are very comfortable but we don't have lots of luxuries and are very happy like that. The thought of owing lots of money would keep me awake at night.

SummerSun10 · 12/09/2019 06:55

We have a mortgage and student loans but no other debt. I was UK’s he worried if we had 20k on a credit card or loan, it sounds like a lot, but depends on your circumstances. If your income is 150k or something then 20k isn’t so bad, but if you earn a low/middle income then 20k is a lot.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 12/09/2019 07:04

£63k mortgage £0 dept, I actually enjoy saving for nice things rather than using credit.

RiddleyW · 12/09/2019 07:04

Oh actually on other debt it depends when in the month it is. I do all spending on credit cards but pay off in full each month. So anywhere between 0 and about 2k in a normal month.
