Term time holidays at nursery

Hi all. My son is turning 4 in 2 weeks. He was currently attending a private nursery (eligible for free 30 hours) and we talked out with the managers for a holiday for 2 months and everyone agrees over there, but yesterday I got a call from one of the best ofsted schools in our area and they gave him a place in school nursery which he's due to start tomorrow....now I'm wondering if this 2 months holidays are going to cost me a penalty??? It was all planned from a long time back and this school nursey place just turned up...I tried to start the talking with her Home visiting teacher but she brushed the topic away by saying " too many holidays can make him leave school" she also added "once he's 5 , Holiday are a big NO NO" so I didn't mention our already booked plan...😰😰😰

P.S we even booked our flights 6 months back with the consent of the private nursery he was attending.

I’ve no idea what most of your post means but holidays in nursery are fine.

Aafi · 11/09/2019 17:45

I'm so sorry, I think it's just the panic putting it this way. My son(turning 4 in 2 weeks) just got a place in a school nursey but I'm traveling the end of next month for 2 months. Will I be given a penalty for his holidays or can he be kicked out of nursery for being absent for 2 months?

If it is a school nursery or could depend how oversubscribed they are.

Tumbleweed101 · 11/09/2019 17:47

Shouldn’t be any restrictions until they are compulsory school age and registered in school.

You won't get fined. but you might lose his place if you are off for 2 months, and that would be fair enough - if you don't need the place then another child could have the spot.

I hope you've still given the private nursery notice and paid them for it.

Cardboardumbrella · 11/09/2019 17:50

You are not going to get a penalty but the school May remove him from their register if he has 2 months off. When is the holiday?

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 11/09/2019 17:52

If I were you I would 'fess up before you make the move. Some settings round here would require you to leave as school nursery places are like gold dust. Private nurseries are fine so long as you pay your fees.

Trafalger · 11/09/2019 17:54

I don't think the setting will be able to claim for the 30 funded hours while you are travelling as the local authority expect a certain level of attendance. So you may be expected to pay for the 2 months that you are away if you want them to hold open his place.

Aquafresca · 11/09/2019 17:54

Statutory education starts once the child is 5 yrs old. I would recommend that once your child starts nursery, go to the office and mention the holiday . When my child was in nursery even though she could take off the school office told us to formally apply for leave. And it was granted. Don't worry too much. Yes the school and the teacher s encourage parents to take off or plan holiday s during the school breaks but since its just nursery I think it should be alright.

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 11/09/2019 18:01

So you're going to pay the private nursery, the new pre-school and for 2 months of travelling? Sounds crazy expensive to me.

You shouldn't have a penalty though.

TriciaH87 · 11/09/2019 20:01

It's nursery not school so no. Legally until the term after 5th birthday they do not have to be there so cannot issue fines. But in my area not had fines even taking them out of juniors etc.

justintimberlakesfishwife · 11/09/2019 20:10

At our school pre-school, parents were told they might lose their place if they took term time holidays. You need to check what their policy is before you accept the place.

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 11/09/2019 20:14

They can't fine you for unauthorised abscences in nursery, but unless they agree the holiday they can remove your son from the roll. So you could easily lose the place for non-attendance of 2 months, especially early in the school year.

I would go and beg and plead them to agree the abscence (they might, especially if it is for eg going to see family who live a long way away).

Round here they are hardcore and they'd refuse it - kind of agree if you'd be blocking a long waiting list of kids who need a nursery place and you're not here for most of a term.

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 11/09/2019 20:14

tbh I would go and find out before you move. And stick with your private nursery if the school nursery are not cool with it.
