Bin day - Now once a fortnight

Anyone else have their general waste taken once every 2 weeks?

It used to be once a week, they've changed it to once every 2 weeks and Im really struggling. I've got 3 (yes 3) recycling bins, which for the most part get used to capacity. There's always a little room left. (Myself and DH aren't driving yet so we order a lot from Amazon)

I recycle everything that can possibly be recycled and I've scoured the website to make sure I know what can and can't be recycled.

My issue is that I have 2 young children in nappies. I've tried reusable nappies and I can't find anything that doesn't give them nappy rash. Also excema runs in the family and DS is riddled with it, the reusable nappy irritates it. So those are out of the equation.

I emailed the council to request a bigger waste bin and explain the situation. They have fobbed me off. Offering another recycling bin. Which would leave me with 4 bloody recycling bins!!
The nappies alone fill the general waste bin in a 2 week period.

Is anyone else in a similar boat? What did you do?
AIBU to be really cheesed off that the council have just sent a pointless, unhelpful, generic email back and haven't listened to the problem?

It's great isn't it and you get to pay 50% more council tax than you were paying 20 years ago for 50% less services! Yay for the wonderful advances of 21st century Britain...Hmm

Mummyoflittledragon · 11/09/2019 20:06

Amazon gives you the option to get deliveries without extra packaging.

Ericaequites · 11/09/2019 20:07

A few mothballs in the bottom of your waste bin will prevent flies.
I live rurally in the United States, and have to take my own trash and recycling to the waste transfer station.

VanGoghsDog · 11/09/2019 20:31

Make friends with a single person - my bins are never full, I only put them about about one in three times (so every six weeks), but I'd be fine about someone else using it if they put it out and brought it in when they did.

PavlovaFaith · 11/09/2019 20:32

Our bins went to fortnightly collection about 20 years ago!!!

lavabug5 · 11/09/2019 20:32

Our general waste bin is every three weeks

messolini9 · 11/09/2019 20:57

Every 3 weeks here.
And I generally only use it every 6 weeks.

NewPapaGuinea · 11/09/2019 21:01

Ours alternate between recycling and normal. Food every week. We can leave extra recycling in boxes if necessary.

PooWillyBumBum · 11/09/2019 21:04

Ours have been fortnightly for years and years now. We never fill our general waste. Could you ask a couple of neighbours if they mind you popping a bag or two into theirs?

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 11/09/2019 21:09

We have just switched to fortnightly refuse collections.
Smallish refuse bin, no option for a larger bin unless there are 5 or more in the house.
Now have 2 big recycling bins though as we requested an extra. Older dc so no nappies thankfully. It's a big transition if you aren't used to it.

Think we will be ok, we recycle lots. Recently discovered a local couple who run a recycling charity for all those hard to recycle things so crisp packets, food packets, pens and on and on. It's fabulous and makes a big difference to our rubbish volume.

Our council doesn't do a food waste collection which is a shame.

ThorsMistress · 11/09/2019 21:23

2 weekly here too.

Green bin week 1
Black bin week 2
Green bin week 3
Black bin week 4

And so on

Fluandseptember · 11/09/2019 21:28

First thing to do is cancel Amazon Prime!
Once you have it, you'll use it. Once you don't, you'll wait till you have the min spend before ordering. That alone will cut your waste substantially.
We're a family of 5 (nobody in nappies any more), and we get by w the smallest size of wheelie bin (both for recycling and general waste). I opted for the smaller one because I knew if we had the bigger one, we'd fill it, and this way I'm much more careful.

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 11/09/2019 21:40

I didn't realise fortnightly was the norm. We're still on weekly collections for general waste. Food isn't collected separately though and we only have a small box for paper and card, which often won't fit everything.

user1494588420 · 11/09/2019 21:47

We have weekly bin collections. One black Wheely bin for non recycling took on a Wednesday then alternative weeks garden then paper ,cardboard and glass.

m0therofdragons · 11/09/2019 21:54

Wow we've had 2 weekly since 2010 as we requested a larger bin when dtds were born as homes with 3 dc under school age we're entitled to them (then prick of a neighbour tried stealing it - the only big bin in the cul de sac; idiot). They're now planning 3 weekly collections from next April.

I actually don't mind however I'd like more robust recycling bins with actual lids!

Lilsquish · 11/09/2019 22:01

Mine is once every 4 weeks.

I have a plastics recycling bin
Cardboard recycling bin (4 weekly)
Garden rubbish bin (4 weekly)
General waste bin (4 weekly)
Glass box (2 weekly)
Food box (weekly)
Plastic sack for nappies (2 weekly)

Rediculous

wonkylegs · 11/09/2019 22:05

We're on two week collection and found that with nappies that we did fill it within 2 weeks but never exceeded it.
Got us thinking about what we bought and what we threw away.
Now only have nighttime nappies 2 week collection is about half full.

IsobelRae23 · 11/09/2019 22:06

Our general waste has been every other week in a small bin for over 6 years.

BaggiesBride · 11/09/2019 22:07

My other half puts a piece of cardboard in the top of our general waste towards the end of the 2 weeks. He then gets in the bin and jumps on it. Its amazing how much extra space he creates doing this. Fat f'er. :-)

RibenaMonsoon · 11/09/2019 22:34

Thank you all for the suggestions and replies. It sounds like we've actually been spoilt having waste collection once a week.

I don't want an extra bin, just one of the larger ones would do. Will look into maybe paying for one if need be then.

As much as I want to cut down on waste and be more eco friendly, it's the wrong time to be making my own life harder right now.
What with a brand new baby and an extremely active and energy filled toddler, learning to drive and going self employed all in one go, I'm not in the right place to be giving myself extra work to do in the form of extra laundry or finding alternatives to my usual way of shopping. But it's something I'll look into when the dust has settled as I really do want to be more eco friendly.

For now it's get arse stuck in bin while squashing it all down scenario for me then. Until alternatives can be found.

Ours have been fortnightly for about 15 years.
Week one general waste
Week two garden waste bin and recycling bin (glass, plastic, tins, paper (but not shredded paper!) and cardboard.

No food waste collection though

Dyrne · 11/09/2019 22:44

an extremely active and energy filled toddler

So... a normal toddler then. Wink

To me, switching to a weekly online Tesco shop seems to be a fuck load easier than faffing around with multiple deliveries and then twatting around jumping in bins.

Like, I get not wanting to research shampoo bars and bamboo toothbrushes and start making your own deodorant; but to me it’s almost like you’re going out of your way at the moment to create more waste than the average bog standard family. It’s a bit mind boggling tbh, (and i’m saying that as someone guilty of using the odd dettol wipe to make life easier).

BMW6 · 11/09/2019 22:47

But to be honest WTF are you buying from Amazon so frequently?

CaptainPovey · 11/09/2019 22:50

We have a weekly collection for general waste and recycling - no glass though

Garden waste is every two weeks and we pay for the bin.

Clearly very lucky

JustLooking2019 · 11/09/2019 22:53

It’s crazy how much it differs in different areas! Our rubbish, recycling and food waste is collected weekly with garden waste every two weeks. We are provided a black tub for glass and plastic and a blue tub for cardboard and paper and also a green caddy for food waste which must be bagged in a special type bag. You can purchase a wheely bin for garden waste but it’s a yearly subscription. We have no general rubbish bin at all and just have to put our black sacks out at the end of the drive which inevitably get ravaged by foxes as the council insists we leave them out before 6am but then they don’t actually collect until much later, after I’ve left for work at 7.45 anyway.
