Anyone else have their general waste taken once every 2 weeks?

It used to be once a week, they've changed it to once every 2 weeks and Im really struggling. I've got 3 (yes 3) recycling bins, which for the most part get used to capacity. There's always a little room left. (Myself and DH aren't driving yet so we order a lot from Amazon)

I recycle everything that can possibly be recycled and I've scoured the website to make sure I know what can and can't be recycled.

My issue is that I have 2 young children in nappies. I've tried reusable nappies and I can't find anything that doesn't give them nappy rash. Also excema runs in the family and DS is riddled with it, the reusable nappy irritates it. So those are out of the equation.

I emailed the council to request a bigger waste bin and explain the situation. They have fobbed me off. Offering another recycling bin. Which would leave me with 4 bloody recycling bins!!
The nappies alone fill the general waste bin in a 2 week period.

Is anyone else in a similar boat? What did you do?
AIBU to be really cheesed off that the council have just sent a pointless, unhelpful, generic email back and haven't listened to the problem?

I don't need the 3rd blue lid recycling bin. I was given it by the council as I'd asked for a black refuse bin and they wouldn't give me one. My recycling can fit in the other two.
So if I can get hold of a black lid for the 3rd recycling bin then its magically turned into a refuse bin.
Shock

Yeah and where are you going to leave it go be emptied? Confused they will only empty one black bin per household unless the house has actually been given two- which the bin men know. They won’t just lift a second one because it’s there.

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 12/09/2019 17:44

Our bins have numbered stickers on to stop you buying your own and putting it out for collection.
They will also only empty the bin is the lid s closed properly but they will take extra cardboard if broken down and left out with the recycling bin.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 12/09/2019 17:45

We’ve had fortnightly general waste for years and years. I usually only put my general waste out monthly though as even then the bin isn’t full. Even when mine were in nappies the bin never filled up (I used a sangenic nappy wrapper).

Food waste is collected weekly and we are moving to fortnightly for recycling once we get bigger bins for that.

Dyrne · 12/09/2019 17:51

Jesus Christ. So rather than taking the opportunity to reflect on the ridiculous amount of waste you are producing; you are scheming and are actively proud of yourself for coming up with a solution so you can merrily continue.

The amount of time and mental effort it’s taken you to come up with that ‘workaround’; you could have had a look, cancelled your Amazon subscribe and save orders, and set up a weekly Tesco delivery.

But yeah, give yourself a pat on the back, OP Hmm

Ours is monthly.

The council refuse to supply wheelie bins and expect people to purchase them privately (stipulating size and maximum weight) and recycling is weekly -food (must be in council bags only available in three places in county so people don't tend to bother due to cost so after being emptied the bins get chucked back on pavement and eventually break (charge to be replaced) if not in bag then bits of food attract rodents, paper recycling is a very thin bag which breaks very easily, glass a massive box which is too big if living in a small flat/bedsit, there's a weekly collection for nappies/incontienece pads which must be registered for but they must not under any circumstances have blood in (mine often do due to a medical condition) and the bags they supply for that are bright coloured and advertise what's in it and are easy for rats to get into (which they do as again they're very thin).

There's constant questions about increased rats in the area and the place stinking and tourists are always complaining about the stink and rubbish everywhere. Council would rather put down rat poison in drains (which makes no difference) than go back to twice a month collections.

Miss a collection then they won't collect the extra you must gradually increase over following months, no bins out before 7am bin day and they can be collected from then to 6pm (by which time usually all over floor) and that's if they bother to turn up. When I was twice a month it was common for them not to bother, once a month is rediculous.

Recycling that hasn't been fully washed and dried won't be taken anymore - I cannot manage to wash and dry waste (as I'm disabled) so it's really effected me. The councils advice was to move somewhere bigger or ask for extra cash for a carer to wash my waste (like they give carers for that!).

Becca19962014 · 12/09/2019 17:57

The advertising can be embarrassing for people, I don't mean the rats can read!!

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 12/09/2019 17:58

I wasn’t sure before but I am now. This is OPs 3rd (at least) thread about bins. All complaining they haven’t enough bins, wanting more bins from the council, can’t drive so can’t take anything to the tip. One thread revealed she didn’t know to collapse boxes to give her more room in the recycling bin. I’m not convinced it isn’t a troll tbh.

Singlenotsingle · 12/09/2019 18:08

Fortnightly works very well for us. Most of the rubbish is recyclable, cardboard, plastic, tin cans. The sooner you get those babies potty trained the better.

RibenaMonsoon · 12/09/2019 18:29

Joxer this is the only thread I've ever made about bins...are you OK?
By all means, this is AIBU so there has to be a resident troll hunter otherwise someone might think this is Chat.

I emailed the council again about this hours ago. That last comment was meant to be light hearted. I'm not actually going to start fanning about with bin lids for goodness sake. I was looking online for solutions is all to see what others have done.

Maybe my Baldrick impression got lost Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks to everyone who replied. Its interesting as we thought we had been hard done by but apparently we were being spoilt. We will manage I'm sure. Enjoy your night everyone.

Nah. That wasnt lighthearted. Not until people called you on it.

ellesworth · 12/09/2019 18:56

Ours is every three weeks. We have five different bins. The recycling ones are the size of shoeboxes.

Cakeorchocolate · 12/09/2019 19:12

It's been every 2 weeks for a long time in my area. Talking 10-15 years.

Even with 2 in nappies I can't understand how nappies alone fill your bin.

RibenaMonsoon · 12/09/2019 19:13

People didn't understand what I meant Joxer. That's why I elaborated.
I head tilted silently Wink
I'm one of those annoying aquarians that thinks they are funny but aren't really.

It was a 'wouldn't it be funny if'and a' do people do this? ' scenario I was talking about with DH

Sure.

Aaarrgghhh · 12/09/2019 19:35

I want to say you can easily cut down on amazon parcels and all the cardboard with it. Do an online Tesco or other supermarket shop and get the nappies and wipes there. 8 pack of pampers on offer for two boxes for £12 they usually are £10 each. It will cut down with all the waste that’s for sure.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 12/09/2019 19:38

Ours have been fortnightly since forever.

We put our bin out when it's full. Every 6 weeks, maybe. But then the only thing that goes in it is unrecyclable plastic. Food waste goes in the compost. Tins, glass, plastic bottles and newspapers get recycled. Cardboard and paper gets burnt. I'm intending to use reusable nappies as I'd hate to put so much rubbish into landfill.

Peanutbutterforever · 12/09/2019 19:56

Jeepers, and I thought I was over reliant on Amazon!

ScrimshawTheSecond · 12/09/2019 19:57

Every three weeks here. Recycling same.

Dalmatian88 · 12/09/2019 20:03

YABU. Kinda ew how you make that much trash ? Confused

RibenaMonsoon · 12/09/2019 20:04

Okay DH has just ordered a Tesco shop with pull ups for DS. I'll have a look at other places I can get DDs nappies from. She's got loads so no need yet.

Thank you for the suggestions. Will try to curb my Amazon addiction.

We still have weekly collections for general and food waste. The council don't supply waste bins, just the recycling ones. You can have whatever size bin you damn well like, as long as you buy it yourself. Most people don't bother though, they just put rubbish out in bags (which the cats, foxes and seagulls then rip open, so the rubbish gets scattered all over the place).

Our food waste goes in the general rubbish, because I can't get the food container open with my arthritic hands, and at the moment we're not composting, but even so our rubbish is often only one small bagfull a week (2 adults and a dog in the household).

The thought of shitty nappies festering in bins for 2 weeks or more, especially in hot weather, is just bleugh.

TurquoiseDress · 12/09/2019 20:10

We get our general waste collected every 2 weeks

Each week is a recycling box- one week paper etc and the other week glass and plastic etc

We've got 2 recycling bins for each type- so 4 in total and they are all full by collection day

It's been this way for years as far I can tell (SE London)

Sounds like you need a larger or additional general dustbin

LakieLady · 12/09/2019 20:36

OP, I may have misunderstood, but if you're putting waste from stuff you buy for your DH's business in the domestic waste bin, it's no wonder that it gets full quickly. Business waste is treated very differently and a lot of businesses have to pay extra to have business waste removed and dealt with.

And I'm bloody jealous of everyone whose council collect garden waste. The only way we can get garden waste collected is to pay £40+ a year for a special bin, which is supposed to be collected monthly by the private firm that operates the scheme, but mostly isn't. The bins aren't very big, and they don't seem to want to take anything bigger than grass cuttings and very small prunings.

We have to take ours to the tip.... the tip that shuts at 4pm, and often has a massive queue so that unless you get down there early in the afternoon, it's shut before you get to the front of the queue. We often have garden waste hanging around for a week until we can take it to the tip.

And for this privilege, we pay the 6th highest council tax in the country!

RibenaMonsoon · 12/09/2019 20:42

No sorry I wasn't really very clear on that point. My fault. DH does buy the odd thing for the business delivered to home but they aren't big things in big packaging. More like office supplies here and there. Its mainly retail based so any waste would go into the bins allocated for the retail outlet. But we do work from home here and there.
