Hobbyhorse345 · 11/09/2019 16:36

People keep saying that lies were told on both the Leave and Remain side in the run up to the referendum.
What lies were told on Remain side? I am not aware of any.

Oh do get a life

Swisskit · 11/09/2019 16:49

Well as far as I was concerned, Remain meant maintaining the status quo. So I assumed everything would stay just as it was. Therefore there really was no agenda for Remain as such.

www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/jun/14/osborne-predicts-30bn-hole-in-public-finance-if-uk-votes-to-leave-eu

In a sign of the panic gripping the remain campaign, the chancellor plans to say that the hit to the economy will be so large that he will have little choice but to tear apart Conservative manifesto promises in an emergency budget delivered within weeks of an out vote.

lakeswimmer · 11/09/2019 16:58

I can remember Jeremy Corbyn saying that we wouldn't have any employment laws if we left the EU which surprised me given that we've had employment law since the 19th Century and the Equal Pay Act came in before we joined the EU.

I think he also added for good measure that we wouldn't have any environmental protection laws either but by that point I'd stopped listening because he seemed to be talking bollocks.

MerryChristmasHarry · 11/09/2019 17:07

A lot of things that have been called as lies on the Remain side were stuff that they claimed would happen after we left. Some of those predictions haven't (yet) come true and these are often characterised as lies by Leavers. It's hard to tell though, when someone makes a prediction that doesn't come to pass, whether they were telling what they believed to be the truth or not. They could've been in good faith but wrong. Or in bad faith but right I guess!

familycourtq · 11/09/2019 17:07

David Cameron used our taxes to pay for a leaflet that said -

"This is your decision. The government will implement what you decide."

That turned out to be a lie - because he was only expecting one answer.

Gingerbreadsonme · 11/09/2019 17:09

None of the predictions for after we’ve left can have happened yet - we haven’t left yet...

Paintedmaypole · 11/09/2019 17:15

lakeswimmer I don't recall Jeremy Corbyn saying that at all. He did say that some of the European employment laws etc were one of the advantages of being in Europe but overall I don't think he is strongly in the remain camp. Of course we would have our own environmental guidelines and employment laws if we left the EU. It is just that if the current right wing governme t had their way they wouldn't be very good ones.

MerryChristmasHarry · 11/09/2019 17:15

I'm not sure Cameron's was a lie so much as a mistake. The Tories at that point wrongly believed Article 50 could be triggered solely by the executive. Ie, he was promising to do something that it was in his power to do. That was wrong, and it needed parliamentary approval. That's the point at which the government are promising something that isn't in their gift. But he may have genuinely believed otherwise.

familycourtq · 11/09/2019 17:40

@MerryChristmasHarry But Cameron could have triggered article 50 soon after the referendum as he repeatedly said he would during the campaign. He had plenty of time - he not only didn't trigger it as he promised, he resigned without doing it. He was lying about his intentions because he didn't think leave would win. That was a lie.

The Gina Miller challenge came later and might never even have happened if Cameron hadn't lied (for the avoidance of doubt I am not saying she was wrong - or right for that matter).

MrsMaiselsMuff · 11/09/2019 17:51

@lakeswimmer He didn't say that. He said that they would go back on the additional rights secured by virtue of our EU membership during the last Labour government.

Although it's nice to see someone acknowledging that he did campaign for remain. Despite what the media tell us, he actually held more public events than any other party leader during the campaign.

BoneyBackJefferson · 11/09/2019 18:06

The main problem with remain is that they put forward very few points.
They were on the back foot from the very start.
They attacked voters (thick and racist).
The status quo does not exist as the EU is an evolving entity.
and they over spent.

TheMustressMhor · 11/09/2019 18:10

I'm not sure Cameron's was a lie so much as a mistake.

Bloody hell.

It was some mistake though.

Caucho · 11/09/2019 18:13

Of those I remember the best was that leaving would lead to the end of Western Civilisation

MerryChristmasHarry · 11/09/2019 18:15

If Cameron had attempted to trigger Article 50 soon after the referendum there's not a chance in hell it wouldn't have been challenged. Even if he did it literally the day after, it could still have been challenged after that. Ultimately, he promised the government would do something that was actually only in the power of the legislature to deliver. He was only lying if he was aware at the time that he couldn't do that.

familycourtq · 11/09/2019 18:24

He was only lying if he was aware at the time that he couldn't do that.
As Pm if he didn't know he was criminally negligent.

familycourtq · 11/09/2019 18:27

Here's another pre-brexit lie from a remain MP - and often quoted -
And there are almost as many Brits living elsewhere in the EU as there are other EU nationals in Britain.
and here is what an EU document says -
whereas there are currently around 3.2 million citizens of the remaining 27 Member States (EU-27) resident in the United Kingdom and 1.2 million citizens of the United Kingdom (‘UK citizens’) resident in the EU-27;
www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/B-8-2017-0538_EN.pdf?redirect Unless it's the EU telling lies of course.

MerryChristmasHarry · 11/09/2019 18:45

I'd agree he was grossly negligent for a number of reasons!

onalongsabbatical · 11/09/2019 18:56

Of those I remember the best was that leaving would lead to the end of Western Civilisation ha ha ha ha ha!
Bloody feels like it! (I know that's hyperbole, but then I don't think the end of WC was actually claimed so I'm responding in kind.)

taxguru · 11/09/2019 18:58

Emergency budget needed within weeks
Tax rises
Collapse of the pound against other currencies
Recession
Higher unemployment

DorisDaysDadsDogsDead · 11/09/2019 19:05

Emergency budget needed within weeks - Pretty much every budget since has been an emergency
Tax rises - Not yet, but we haven't left, and Boris' Magic Money Tree will need paying for somehow
Collapse of the pound against other currencies - Already happening
Recession - Have you seen the growth figures?
Higher unemployment - Take out the zero hours contracts and people working 2 hours a month...

BonnesVacances · 11/09/2019 19:41

and they over spent

Have you got the info for that Boney?

lakeswimmer · 11/09/2019 20:56

@MrsMaiselsMuff Hmm that maybe strictly accurate but he was very misleading in the radio interview I heard. I can distinctly remember sitting in my car listening and thinking WTF is he talking about. It often comes to mind when people bring up the bloody bus which was also misleading of course.

Septembersunrays · 11/09/2019 21:06

Family I can't believe it, over 3 million on our tiny island but only 1 million spread throughout whole eu 🙄 really?!!

BoneyBackJefferson · 11/09/2019 22:11

BonnesVacances

they over spent on the door to door leaflet campaign, go look it up.
