Posting for traffic because I'm fed up and would like some advice.
Will try to be brief.
Beginning of July I fell from a height and broke my L1 vertabrae. Compression fracture, but stable, no nerve damage they could see.
Was admitted and on the ward for around a week. Put in a back brace and sent home with pain killers etc. Off work, not driving, bad pain etc.
Spinal clinic appointment is 18th September - over two months after the accident with nothing in between.
About a month ago I could feel something wasn't right, it felt like the pain had stagnated and just wasn't getting any better.
Pushed for another x-ray, which showed a 'Slight worsening of the compression since the first x-ray in July' the word anterior was mentioned too, but can't remember it what context.
The GP said it couldn't be that bad because they didn't get me in for surgery, but obviously I'm still concerned because it feels like my recovery is going the wrong way.
I was back in A and E on Friday because I wet myself without realising. They ran tests and neurologically said I was fine, did a urine sample which showed I had an infection which could account for it. On anti biotics.
When I told the consultant in A and E that it had been 8 weeks ago, he said it shouldn't still be hurting. But the thing is it IS. Sometimes a lot. It's like a throbbing, stinging pain. I'm really struggling to be honest. Mentally and physically. I'm so worried this is just my life now. I miss work, and driving, and walking normally, and not having to take painkillers all the time.
AIBU to demand at the clinic they do a scan? AIBU to be worried it's still hurting over 8 weeks later?
Any advice/words anyone could give would be so appreciated at this point.

Have you experienced any numbness or pins and needles in your arms or legs? Have they done an MRI scan?

MrsMozartMkII · 11/09/2019 17:23

Ditto Hairyfairy's questions.

I had a compression fracture at L2 (came off my horse and landed on my feet). It hurt for a long time. The muscles still hurt when I get cold or overdo it. Sometimes I have a list to portside as my right leg doesn't always work properly.

You definitely need to get checked over again.

Okurrrrrrrr · 11/09/2019 18:48

Thanks so much for your replies.
No pins and needles or numbness, I've been checking every day.
Not had an MRI.
@Mrsmozart - Can I ask how long ago that was?

MrsMozartMkII · 11/09/2019 18:53

7 or 8 years ago I think.

Orangesandlemons82 · 11/09/2019 18:56

Ex nurse - I'm surprised you haven't had an MRI scan. admittedly It's been a few years since I worked as a nurse, but what your describing sounds very much like something we would have requested an urgent MRI for, particularly as you wet yourself. Yes, an infection was present but that sounds like it could be a red herring.

Hairyfairy01 · 11/09/2019 18:57

In what way don’t you think you are walking normally? Have you ever wet yourself before? Were you aware when you had? Any loss of sensation at all?

MrsMozartMkII · 11/09/2019 19:02

I head an MRI. I don't understand why they didn't give you one.

My fracture was stable. They wanted to operate (fix it with cement), but the Consultant said it would give me a quicker recovery time but nothing else so I didn't go for it. I had problems with going to the bathroom but never had an accident. Definitely go get checked lass.

Okurrrrrrrr · 11/09/2019 19:13

Thanks so much legends.
I'm just sick of pushing for everything. I pushed for the second x-ray, shows the fracture had got slightly worse, and I would have to push for an MRI even more. At A and E when I asked the consultant why I'd wet myself he said 'It happens' Sad

Does it feel normal when you wipe after going to the loo?

Okurrrrrrrr · 11/09/2019 19:29

@mrsfionacharming
Yes, no numbness there that I've noticed. The A and E doctor did some physical tests on my legs and back passage (sorry Blush ) and he said it appeared normal, so no need for a scan.
I'm terrified I'll need surgery, or that I'll just be one of those poor people who have chronic pain. I'm supposed to be getting married in 8 weeks Sad

Genital numbness is a big red flag, so the fact you don’t have it is a really good sign.

Hairyfairy01 · 11/09/2019 21:17

Just to agree with others, the fact you don’t seem to have numbness or weakness is a good sign, but I to am surprised you didn’t get an mri, especially after you wet yourself. If that happens again seek help ASAP, even with a uti that isn’t normal. Have you been referred to physio?

Okurrrrrrrr · 11/09/2019 21:56

Thank you @hairy. I felt very deflated when they just sent me home and had a cry in the car. My friend is a radiologist, she was the one who told me to go, and was angry I was fobbed off. I'm just clinging on that the physical stuff he did was okay and no numbness. I've had UTI's plenty of times and never had that.
I'm so worried about the spinal clinic.
Does anyone know if they will do another scan? Surely they must do to be sure?

Okurrrrrrrr · 11/09/2019 21:59

Sorry @Hairyfairy01 no I haven't been reffered or had any physio. It was literally wear the back brace, take pain meds, see you end of September.

Hairyfairy01 · 11/09/2019 22:25

If it was me I would be asking at the spinal clinic why you haven’t had an mri. Presumely you don’t normally wet yourself? I’m guessing you are not in your 80’s, so even with a uti, this is not normal. Did you have any other uti symptoms? I would be wanting more answers as to why that happened. Be aware that symptoms may come and go. Get a referral to physio, you can self refer if needed. Without wanting to scare you, ask the spinal clinic how they can be 100% sure it’s not cauda equina. From what you say I don’t think it is, but it needs to ruled out. Good lućk.

Okurrrrrrrr · 12/09/2019 21:51

Thanks again @Hairyfairy01
I called the spinal clinic today and spoke to my consultants medical secretary who in turn spoke to him and got back to me. He said I definitely should have had an MRI when I presented at A and E. Said if it happens between now and seeing him on Wednesday to go straight to A and E.

Today's been a bad day pain wise again. We've got a lot going on at the weekend and I know I won't be able to do any of it. I'm so fed up and down, I keep bursting into tears. I'm almost hoping they recommend surgery so at least some of the pain will go.

I'm fed up. Sad

Sounds like you need a trip to A&E sooner rather than later lass.

They weren't brilliant when I went. Stood for a few hours as it was busy (Sunday evening) and I couldn't sit down. Eventually asked them if I could lie down somewhere. Was given some painkillers that sent me a bit whappy. Doctor only sent me for an xray at the end of her review "as I was there and might as well". Fracture was found and determined to be a new one in the wee hours of the morning. Put on spinal ward in a side room. MRI next day. In for three days.

Okurrrrrrrr · 15/09/2019 18:49

That sounds horrid @MrsMozartMkII
I was quite lucky in that I physically couldn't even move my toes, just lay on the floor screaming, so DH called an ambulance and they came on blues, got me dosed up with gas and air and seen pretty soon.
I've got first spinal clinic on Wednesday and have rung ahead already, they've said they'll do an x-ray and an MRI. Really hoping for good news. I'm getting married in 6 weeks and am a police officer so this has really knocked me mentally. Kind of just want my life back.

I was lucky overall really. Came off my horse at lunchtime on the Saturday. Thankfully was eating a body protector as I went sliding across the surface of the school. There was a moment of intense pain, then just hurting. Lady in the car and rested for a few minutes. Got back on the horse. Did all the usual stuff for the next day and a half, but couldn't sit down properly. A nurse friend sent me to A&E as she was worried.

Yours sounds far more painful. I hope it eases off soonest. I found that a mix of physio and pilates helped immensely, as did the heavy duty Ibuleve (just remember to wash the area well between applications), and later on a magnetic back pad.

Very gentle hugs to you.
