Damage by fitter AIBU

Hi Everyone, I’m hoping for some great advice or to be told IBU

I didn’t know where to post this, so I’ve put it here for traffic, sorry for the length of post.

Having saved for a few years I treated myself to some new bedroom furniture, bed and to top it all some lovely fitted wardrobes from what I thought was a reputable company (advertised a lot on TV and recommended by a high street store who I got the other bedroom furniture through).

The wardrobe company came out and measured everything ready for installation, perfect so far.

When the wardrobe fitter arrived, he turned up on his own even though it was a two man job (the company told me it would need two of them) he took everything upstairs and I didn’t think much of it until the work started.

Not one piece delivered was the right size, so he ended up cutting it all to size in my room, even though they’d been out to measure it. After three hours of cutting everything, there was really thick dust over my bed, carpet, everywhere. It was horrible, why he didn’t do all this outside I have no idea or why it wasn’t pre-cut.

Anyway during this process he damaged the brand new chest of drawers, it looks like he must have dropped a piece of the wardrobe on it. The chest had only been delivered two weeks earlier.

I contacted the wardrobe company and sent them photos of the damage and mentioned I wasn’t that impressed with the state he left my room in. They said someone would be in touch.

Its been 18 weeks now and to start with I spoke to customer services, they finally put me in touch with the regional manager who isn’t interested as the fitter denies causing the damage.

The chest of drawers was ridiculously expensive (well for me) and I’ve saved for ages. To have it damaged two weeks after delivery is really annoying.

Is anyone able to offer me some advice or is this a lost cause, AIBU? I know it may seem petty and I’m no longer sure if I’m annoyed about their damage or the lack of customer care but I’m at a loss as to what to do.

Thanks

I’d be threatening them with legal action in relation to the drawer unit depending on the damage. If it’s something that might conceivably be done by you with keys or a handbag it might be hard to link it to them. If it’s a dirty great gash then the fact you reported it so soon after the visit would help.

As to the dust, it is inevitable with fitted wardrobes due to being fixed to the wall. No doubt it was to a greater extend than could reasonable be expected but other furniture ought to have been covered or moved out the way. In any event, what have you lost through dustiness? Time and a tiny bit of money on your utility bill for hoovering. You can only claim if you demonstrate loss.

Hi, thanks @plunkplunkfizz

The comments about the dust were more just about a general lack of care or consideration.

It’s the damage to the chest of drawers that I’m bothered about.
I asked if anything needed moving and he said no.

The damage is three great big chips out of the top and then down the front not something I could have easily done.

If they’d have been older it could be said existing damage after wear and tear but they are brand new.

Who do I need to contact about legal action? I’ve never been in this position before.

Thanks
