DPD

Ordered a new iPhone today. Message stating time DPD would deliver. Waiting in for said delivery. Watched the guy arrive ( i was standing in the hall) and post a card through my letterbox.
No attempt to knock the door or ring the bell ( we have a ring doorbell, so all recorded).

I chased after him. The look of dismay on his face!!!

Aibu to complain? I wouldn't want to get anyone into trouble but it's just so odd!!!
What was his motivation to do that? Why not at the very least knock the door? I'm totally perplexed....

I would complain, yes. I can understand the potential for why he did what he did, but I am still the type of person who would complain as the delivery service is paid for, and they are not meeting the standard expected.

I would assume that on other occasions he may have delivered to your home around that time, and someone wasn't home, so he made the assumption this would be the same (they are not allowed to leave in safe places for mobile deliveries, it has to be hand delivered to recipient or selected neighbour only).
I know that Hermes do this; when I have Work From Home days, she still just puts it in my safe place and leaves a card without knocking on the door. But at least my items are technically delivered. Would enrage me if I missed something I was waiting on because they hadn't even tried!

Thanks for your answer. What do you mean by you understand the potential for why he did what he did? That's what I don't understand?

Is there an incentive to just leave a card instead of attempt delivery? Doesn't make sense!

They will have time restrictions; DPD particularly have a tracking system where you can get live tracking i.e. "Driver is 2 stops away ETA 4 mins etc"

So, if he has visited your property before and expects you to be working (for example) and not at home to answer, he will probably be thinking to himself "She won't be in, so rather than knock, and wait, perhaps knock again to be sure, wait, and THEN leave the card I'm just gonna put the card through and save myself 2.5 mins and get on to the next job" I'm not saying its a reasonable thought process, or correct - but I do imagine that is probably WHY he done it. My understanding is that delivery/courier drivers are under immense pressure to meet their quotas and deadlines, and can be penalised if they are not met.

But yeah, I'd still complain. Because, sorry, I'm just that person. If you hadn't seen him coming and you had missed your parcel after taking a day off work to wait in for it, then you would be fuming. And rightly so. So, complaints need to be made. Not so the driver gets punished but so that the companies understand that the pressures they are heaping on their employees are counter-productive because this kind of situation arises from them being rushed!

Something similar happened to me with DPD , except driver claimed to have delivered the phone to me and when I challenged him he miraculously found it. I complained to DPD and they sent me a rich tea biscuit with sorry written on it ! A couple of weeks ago whilst expecting a parcel I heard the card being pushed through my letter box, immediately opened door and chased driver. He said he didn't knock because he hates to disturb people at a weekend. I am always reluctant to order items being delivered by DPD.

Thanks for your replies. That helps make some sense of it, although as I'm usually at home at this time of day, doesn't make sense that they would presume I'm not there.
With an expensive item such as an iPhone I suspect most folk would try and be about...

He absolutely SHOULD be punished for this! It's a total failure to do the one damn job he's employed to do! Definitely complain. It's disgraceful service.
