To think that nobody goes to the job centre to get a job?

Do they? Surely they should change the name back to the benefits service. The last place anyone who actually wanted a decent job would go to find one is the bloody job centre? I mean they can call it what they want, but I don't know a single person who has ended up finding a job in the jobcentre, feels a bit like false advertising, only people I've met that go there go for benefits!!

Or AIBU and everyone who goes there gets a job?

@HelenaDove omg that's outstanding, so they made them hunt for an egg to hunt for a job? Surely they'd have had more luck actually suiting people to a job that would be appropriate.

I honestly don't know anyone in real life that has got a job via the jobcentre.

I went to the job centre after being made redundant in 2018, it was a horrible experience. Security guard on the door, an administrator telling me what hours she thought I could work whilst typing away and not even looking at me or interested in my qualifications, experience or what jobs I could actually in real life do. They need to evidence that they have told you that you need to work any hours, any job, any distance, and start anytime. It’s not about finding someone the right job, they don’t care one bit about what you are actually looking for or can realistically achieve. It’s not about finding people careers or jobs that work for them. It’s a tick box exercise. The most demoralising 45 mins of my life. I actually had a holiday pre booked to Berlin the week after, I told the adviser who looked at me puzzled and said “is that not in the UK” I called up after my first appointment and cancelled the whole thing. Luckily got a job after a few weeks but to those who have to continue going whilst they look for a job I can’t see how it’s a helpful service at all.

I was on income support for 4 years. I had to go in every 6 months for an "assessment" but they didn't actually do anything, just tick a few boxes. I wasn't made to job search as DS was under 5 at the time.

I found my current job on our town's local facebook page. My boss always advertises on there as it's free and loads of people use facebook.

Agree. The only jobs they ever have are minimum wage catering. Even if you show your list of references of every job you've applied for online that week (I averaged at least 20 a week) they still insist you search their job site at every visit or they won't sign your money off. They also tried to tell me I didn't know what the going rate was for secretarial in London... after 20years as a PA here. I've never met so many jobsworth, inarticulate, very dim people in one place.

I’ve always found new jobs by sending CV’s off with a covering letter asking if they have any vacancies. It’s worked every time within 4 weeks. Might be luck but it’s worth a try.
