To ask my new landlord to share his WiFi code for a week

I'm moving to a new house later this week; owner lives right next door (semi-detached property). I've arranged for broadband to be installed but it's going to take two weeks, and I work from home so in a bit of a pickle. To add to the issue, I'm still waiting to hear about school places for the kids (will take at least two more weeks) so I can't decamp to a coffee shop for the day.

AIBU considering asking the owner the day I move in to share his WiFi password with me for just a week? Maybe I should offer to pay money for using it?

Oh and it's been a bit of a sudden move hence not being able to arrange broadband (and all places). until recently

You could ask, but they probably won’t.

Henrysmycat · 10/09/2019 23:06

Fortune favours the brave. You got nothing to lose my asking nicely.

BiByeBaby · 10/09/2019 23:06

Go for it. Ask nicely he can only say no

PurpleDaisies · 10/09/2019 23:06

No, it’s a nuisance but contracts usually say you can’t share across different properties. It’s wrong to put them in that position.

NearlyGranny · 10/09/2019 23:08

YABU. Begin as you mean to go on. Are dongles still a thing?

BackinLondon2019 · 10/09/2019 23:09

That's what I thought..... thank you. I would probably bottle it at the last minute ha!

I don’t understand about the school thing, why can’t they contact you on a mobile if you explain the situation

BackinLondon2019 · 10/09/2019 23:10

I believe dongles end up being quite expensive in the end..... maybe hot-spotting my mobile too my laptop?

School as in the kids don't have a place assigned yet so they need to be with me all day. I cannot go to a coffee shop to use their WiFi and work from there for hours with the kids on tow

Sparklesocks · 10/09/2019 23:12

Worth an ask!
But if not could you get a dongle as a temporary measure? I think they’re quite cheap in Curry’s

HairyFloppins · 10/09/2019 23:12

I think it might be a bit cheeky.

Don't you have a phone with internet access? I thought everyone had 4g these days.

BackinLondon2019 · 10/09/2019 23:13

Thank you. Will check Curry's out!

Why not ask and offer to pay a share of the bill? So you're not being cheeky but asking for help?

BackinLondon2019 · 10/09/2019 23:13

I need to be working from my laptop

No don't do it. I had new neighbours ask the same to me once and it was really awkward. I'm usually a push over but I said no. They might as well have asked me if they could use my bathroom for 2 weeks. Most importantly I didn't want them slowing down my connection, which it would. I didn't want them delaying the connection date again and again and freeloading from me. I didn't want to risk them passing on malware, I didn't want to break the law.

BackinLondon2019 · 10/09/2019 23:15

Offering to pay a share of the bill would make me feel better but after reading all comments I'm not sure I'm feeling brave enough now to askBlush

Why don't you tether your laptop from your mobile data?

user1573624 · 10/09/2019 23:15

My neighbors offered to pay too. I still said no.

BackinLondon2019 · 10/09/2019 23:16

Thank you user. Lots of valid points there against asking. Oh well.....

Tethering my laptop from my mobile data could work. I do several webex presentations / meetings a day though, won't that use an obscene amount of data?

Fuzzywuzzywuzzy · 10/09/2019 23:22

Most landlords do not live next door. What would you have done if that was the case? Nip round to the new neighbour and ask them to share?

YABU in thinking it.

Either go into work (and pay for childcare), take a couple of weeks off or suck it up and pay for a dongle to cover the two weeks.

user1573624 · 10/09/2019 23:24

Probably. Is your phone on a contract? Could you jump ship to 3? They offer very reasonable unlimited data SIM only packages. If you are worried about how much data you'd use it is even more reason not to ask the neighbour unless they would definitely be out all day. How old are the kids? Soft play might be an option a few times, they always have free WiFi.

tempester28 · 10/09/2019 23:32

Are you getting WiFi from bt? You may be able to log into
openzone on WiFi if you can pick it up in your location. You can also buy
a week's pass.

Otherwise use you mobile to create a hotspot.
