Asking for a Raise?

OhHelpMaBoab · 10/09/2019 22:13

I have a new job teaching in higher education. My experience and qualifications are above what is essential to the role. The salary works on an annual basis whereby I will move up pay increments.

Is it unreasonable to request that I start at higher than the first incremental amount?

The pay will be relevant to the role, regardless if you have a higher qualification to what is required.

I see, so because I will be considered as a 'junior' member of staff, I will only be paid for this, even if my performance is above what is expected?

You should always ask to start wherever you think is right according to your value to the organisation. Unless you ask you will never get.

I would assume they have set salary amount for each role, if someone is over qualified for the role then it's a bonus for them due to the individuals choice.

Of course I would assume you have performance reviews which would be based on your performance but not your qualifications and a pay raise would be something to be discussed as with any role.

Where I work (higher ed) you can ask for an accelerated increment. I'm doing that at the moment to go straight to the top of the level I'm at.

What was it advertised at and what have they offered you? Seems odd to be looking at renegotiating after the event?

You could ask, but businesses don't really work like that. You get paid for the role. Exaggerated slightly but it's a bit like expecting more than your colleagues for flipping burgers in McDonald's because you're a qualified chef.
