I e been overweight for a long time, combination of stressful home life, unsupportive partner, my own greediness.

Recently suffered a close bereavement and it's sent me spiralling, I need to stop and I need to stop now!

I'm the wrong side of 50, I'm going to get ill very soon.

I'm not keen on"shake" style diets, I'm prepared for a club, it would rather try alone if I'm honest.

I've literally forgotten what a health breakfast and lunch looks like. I just grab rubbish and eat that.

Please help with ideas and tips.

Eggs for breakfast, fill you up, have an omelette stuffed with veg. No snacking between meals, eat three a day a roughly the same time and look at portion sizes. Drink loads of water. Lots of walking where possible. Those are my best tips sndbif followed always work, good luck

TickleMyFanny · 10/09/2019 07:45

Didntwanttochangemyname · 10/09/2019 07:47

Eat less, move more.
I've lost 5 stone this year counting calories. You can do this.

cheesenpickles · 10/09/2019 07:48

My weight has always yo-yoed and I struggle to keep "on the straight and narrow" when following a diet. I read about 5:2 and doing some more research discovered intermittent fasting and it's been a game changer from me. I started off fasting for 16 hours and having an earring window or 8, eventually moving up to a 20 hour fasting window and eating for four. Although I also follow low carb, I can eat pretty much what I want, can adapt my window to suit social situations and have lost 50lbs in the last 3 months. It won't suit everybody but it's been an absolute game changer for me and even when I hit my goal weight I'll continue to follow it as a way of eating.

Sorry meant to add I have 3 tbs porridge with soya milk, a banana and a small tbs of mixed seeds everyday for breakfast

Lunch is this small portion of pasta and sauce

Dinner is whatever I want but a small portion just a little bigger than lunch but I have loads of veg

If you like I’ll take pics! Tonight is chicken stir fry

I've found the 16:8 method works well, in combination with avoiding bread and potatoes.

Also - eat a big breakfast, a fairly big lunch and a small dinner.

(16:8 is when you fast for 16 hours in 24. I fast from 6 pm - 10 am)

For me, I found by trial and error that bread and potatoes didn't exactly help me with weight loss. Some people also avoid rice and pasta. I do not like pasta and I eat small amounts of rice.

I know a lot of women swear by Slimming World, too. There isn't one where I live (remote area of Scotland) but the support and tips you get if you can find one near you might be just what you need.

But maybe go through your cupboards and chuck out anything that is laden with crap sugar. I don't mean fruit. I mean biscuits/cakes/pies.

I have lost over five stone.

I still have five stone to go. If I can do it I'm sure you can. And I'm about your age - a bit older actually.

I've been doing this for twenty months now.

How much would you like to lose?

TickleMyFanny · 10/09/2019 07:51

I only use soya in porridge because it’s low calorie - if I used my normal blue milk it would be too many.

AuntieStella · 10/09/2019 07:52

So you are under 50 (the 'wrong' side)?

If you are actually the better side of 50, then the first thing to do is to look at your attitude. You do sound very pessimistic right now

But I know what you mean, I decided I didn't want to be fat any more when I was in my late 40s. And I did it - I lost the weight and have kept it off for some years now.

I've posted about this at quite some length quite a lot of times. So apologies if any readers find it repetitive.

I went about it by the basic method of eating less. The three things that made the biggest difference were:

  • using MFP and really measuring everything at the start (and test measuring things sometimes after that, so portion size does not creep upwards)
  • ditching alcohol for a while (empty calories, plus tendency to increase urge to nibble
  • joining a thread in the WeightLossChat topic on MN

Getting out into the fresh air, ideally somewhere green, for a walk (no matter how short) probably won't do much to accelerate weight loss but can really help your mood and wider wellbeing

MashedSpud · 10/09/2019 07:53

Personally I skip breakfast. I know all the garb about it being the most important meal of the day but I can’t stay under my calorie limit if I have three meals a day so I just have a couple of coffees (no sugar).

I’d get my fitness pal app and log what you’re eating/drinking. It really gives you a good idea about what high calorie foods you need to replace in your diet. It helps me hit my protein goal too.

I have to have a snack so I have two rice cakes and/or a small yoghurt.

I use a rowing machine while I watch Netflix.

TickleMyFanny · 10/09/2019 07:54

For me it doesn’t matter what I eat as long as there’s not a lot of it. As you get older you need less food. I also have a sedentary job so I make sure I exercise too.

snowpo · 10/09/2019 07:54

Have you tried low carb, no sugar & up the protein? Works best for me as it stops me craving more carbs.

lastqueenofscotland · 10/09/2019 07:55

Honestly what do you eat now on a day to day basis? And working from there is a good starting point

TickleMyFanny · 10/09/2019 07:55

I am 47 btw and sometimes I wish I still smoked. Was whip thin what with all the smoking and not eating Grin
