To claim compensation for a delayed flight whilst on business?

Not me, but DH. His flight was delayed, then connecting flight cancelled, he was put up in a hotel overnight.

There is no workplace policy on this, would he be unreasonable to claim the few hundred Euros compensation from the airline that is apparently allowed under EU law?

Just wondering if it could land him in hot water in work as they booked the tickets really.

Does he get time off in lieu, or any other payment for the additional time he spent travelling due to the delay? If he does, then the compensation goes to the company, if not, I’d say he keeps it.

If it’s eaten into your weekend, then it has inconvenienced your DH rather than impacted on work (sounds like he was due to fly back on a Friday?).

I’d get something in writing from HR to cover you and then claim.

My workplace does have a policy on this, if any transport is delayed to the point of compensation any refund or compensation goes to the person travelling, as it is their time wasted and it hasn't cost the company anything extra. It once took me six hours to get from Manchester to London on a train, my company had paid £185 for the ticket I kept the refund. I even double checked as I was fairly new then, and was told of course you get it, it makes no difference to the organisation if it took you three hours or six (I was going home) , you were the one inconvenienced. I would get it agreed by line manager though add there's no policy, so it doesn't look dodgy.

Thanks for all the opinions.

DH is quite the cavalier and thinks it'll be fine to claim, but realistically won't get around to it so I'll probably do it and put the money towards something family related, which is why I'm involved, rather than leaving him to it.

I think an email from his line manager is the sensible option, if the company say he can't keep any compensation then I'll let it go and perhaps the company will claim directly.

He's not encountered this before as has always been really lucky on business travel, but this one was a stinker with the airline refusing to return his luggage etc, complete pita.

If he has asked HR and they have said ok, then if he can claim (if there isn't a rule he has had to buy the ticket himself for example) then I would.

He is being compensated for the inconvenience. Travelling with work when you do it regularly is a complete pain in the ass, and he had to stay away from his own bed and home and family an extra night. Yes there isn't a direct financial implication to this (probably) but there probably isn't for the company either.

HR have Okd it so go for it

My DH has claimed three times this year for work trips...regular unreliable domestic flights. Large multinational firm. Agreement is that he's the one who is inconvenienced (he gets back at midnight rather than 7pm), he gets the compensation.

The employer is not entitled to the money, see attached:

He can, but the compensation should go back to whoever booked the tickets ( I assume the company)

I've done it numerous times, never in "secret", we all talk about it openly at work. In my instances, it's always been a late Friday flight cancelled so it's impacted my Saturday so I have no "guilt" feelings as the money clearly compensates me for my time (I don't get the time back from work). If it were a weekday flight - I'd probably still claim it, but I think I'd feel a bit cheeky.
