Posting here for traffic.

Elderly Dad in hospital and now developed these marks on his hands and arm. The staff are not sure what they are.

Any advice?

Pressure sores? Is he mobile at all?

finished31 · 08/09/2019 16:07

He is between the bed & chair and able to walk to the toilet.

I wasn't aware you could get pressure sores on the hand

it's worrying that the staff can't identify them Confused i'd think bruises , as the skin is so think bruises occur with the slight knock in the elderly.

finished31 · 08/09/2019 16:10

A dr has been and is unsure. Apparently they will get a skin dr to look tomorrow ☹️

  • so thin, or grade 1 pressure ulcers if he is immobile
Kam610 · 08/09/2019 16:11

Looks like bruises to me too. Elderly people have such paper thin skin.

Also you can get pressure sores anywhere on the body that there has been prolonged pressure. But they don't look like pressure sores to me.

Powerplant · 08/09/2019 16:13

Is he taking steroids as they can thin the skin and exacerbate bruising?

nearlyfinished1moreyear · 08/09/2019 16:14

I would also say pressure sores

Livebythecoast · 08/09/2019 16:41

Is he taking Warfarin?

Stapelberg · 08/09/2019 18:29

Definitely not pressure damage. Keep a close eyes. Very clearly defined purple.spoys like that may be the start of Steven Johnston syndrome. If it is, it will progress to blisters.

finished31 · 08/09/2019 19:05

No he's not taking warfarin any more. He's 83.

I'm immunosuppressant too which is a concern incase it could be anything contagious.

Thank for all the replies.

I only asked about Warfarin as it's fairly common to get unexplained marks or bruising.
I hope he's okay and wish you well x

finished31 · 08/09/2019 20:39

Thanks @Livebythecoast.

My friend suggested MRSA which has made me panic a bit tbh.

Sosososotired · 08/09/2019 20:50

Looks like mrsa to me too. There is a slideshow of mrsa images on webMD and it looks very similar

Livebythecoast · 08/09/2019 20:51

I'm sure that's one thing (MRSA) that they'll test for routinely especially in a hospital environment.
Older peoples skin is extremely sensitive and thin and a simple knock could cause a mark and doesn't always represent anything sinister. Hopefully the hospital will give you some reassurance once they've carried out some tests x

finished31 · 08/09/2019 21:26

I've called the ward and asked the sister can they test him because I've had an organ transplant I cannot risk going into visit until we know what it is.

Thanks again x

O bless him and you sending my loveFlowers

hungryhippie · 14/09/2019 18:40

Did you find out what it was OP?
I hope everything turned out ok

MilkLady02 · 14/09/2019 18:44

Probably a bit late now, but could they be insect bites? I had blandford fly bites last year and they looked just like that.

nearlyfinished1moreyear · 15/09/2019 11:58

@finished31 did you ever find out what this was?

finished31 · 18/09/2019 17:21

@nearlyfinished1moreyear no they done swabs and they all came back clear. It's not as angry now.

Thanks for asking
