Diana Johnson MP - why have Labour triggered a deselection?

I’ve been trying to square away putting my dislike of momentum and JC to one side, if we had an ordinary GE coming up I would be voting Tory as Labour have been an awful opposition, BUT our political landscape is so precarious at the moment I had begun to think maybe I should just ‘hold my nose’ and vote Labour and they can sort themselves out when they get in, but I am actually concerned that this sorting themselves isn’t going to happen.

We’ve seen Labour allow men to take roles designed to empower women. We’ve seen Labour refuse to acknowledge that traditional Labour voters are turning away because they don’t feel Labour represents them anymore - they have become the party of the middle class socialists. (This is how my family and their circle feel (north west) as does my DHs family (Yorkshire) and our friends and colleagues (midlands).

We’ve seen Labour behave appallingly in Opposition- after all it isn’t a passive role that allows the party to play at 6th form politics it is a functional role and a vital one- they are supposed to hold the government to account and ensure that any legislation going forward is in the best interests of all, and they could have had a much more active role in getting a fair Brexit deal.

And now it looks we are seeing the deselection of MPs who aren’t in thrall to momentum. Which does leave me thinking do Labour not actually want to be in government?

I’m rubbish at doing links but if anyone is interested in finding out about Diana Johnson MP she is a fantastic MP, and I can’t understand why Labour have done this.

Tories are purging their party to move to the far right, labour are purging to move to the far left. I'm hoping that the purged individuals (moderatea) flock to the lib dems are produce a stable, sensible centerist party that I can vote for.

ElizaDee · 08/09/2019 09:48

Don't vote labour as a protest vote. If enough people do that, they might actually get in. Then we're really fucked, JC won't step down.

ArabellaDoreenFig · 08/09/2019 10:00

I would like a moderate centrist government as well, but I can’t vote Lib Dem because of their attitude towards women (ie any woman who stands up for her right to single sex facilities is a bigot)
And the other thorny issue - which is Leave, I’m definitely not against a 2nd ref, (but I do know many WC leave voters who are) but I am against Lib Dem’s stance that they will remain regardless of the outcome of any vote.

Tories are purging their party to move to the far right, labour are purging to move to the far left.

I think it was on Years And Years where one of the characters pointed out that once you go far enough to the right and far enough to the left, you end up meeting which is a scary prospect really.

WrongKindOfFace · 08/09/2019 10:20

It’s the local party members who’ve triggered it because they’re not happy with her position on brexit. Has bugger all to do with momentum.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 08/09/2019 10:25

Corbyn’s Labour policies ( voted in at conference not created by JC himself) are NOT far left. That is MSM spin. His policies are by far and away the most beneficial to ordinary people and were the most popular to the public when they weren’t told which party’s policies they were. Anyone who can vacillate between the Tories as they are now ( far right) and any other party, does not have the interests of normal and vulnerable people at heart. If the Labour Party were in power in somewhere like Finland, they’d be considered centrist. Calling them hard Left is absolutely nonsensical and shows a total lack of understanding of politics.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 08/09/2019 10:32

I can't vote Labour. I have a serious problem with their leader's attitude towards anti-Semitism. To put it mildly. I voted Labour until Tony Blair and have subsequently voted SNP and I find i can no longer do that either.

I'm going to have to hold my nose and vote Lib Dem.

Not exactly a thrilling choice.

WrongKindOfFace

My bil and sil are Labour Party members in that constituency and their take on it is it’s a push to get MPs who support momentum, can you tell me what makes you say differently?

I think all labour party MPs are up for re-selection by their constituencies - but most are being re-selected. I am a member of the Labour Party and had to vote on keeping my local MP in as well. They all did it last week afaik.

MoobaaMoobaa · 08/09/2019 10:42

WrongKindOfFace I could be wrong, as only saw it in passing, but it looks like it was 2 people who triggered it.

Because there was a change in what % is needed, it is now open to abuse.

PositiveVibez · 08/09/2019 10:44

Mistletoeandwhine perfectly put!!

MoobaaMoobaa · 08/09/2019 10:44

But why now? when the all attention needs to be on Westminster.

Why her? a hard working MP who's just won back bencher of the year.

SleepyKat · 08/09/2019 10:58

I’ve decided I’m going to have to vote Lib Dem regardless of their attitude to women. Labour aren’t any better on this issue, in fact I would say they’re worse.

And while I think it’s an important issue voting isn’t just about a single issue/a party isn’t just about a single issue. There are other important topics in the arena and for me at the moment Lib Dem’s are best of a dismal bunch.

CendrillonSings · 08/09/2019 11:01

One thing is absolutely certain - her deselection has nothing, nothing at all, to do with the fact that she is a member of Labour Friends of Israel...

WrongKindOfFace · 08/09/2019 11:05

I’m also only going by what I’ve been told by a third party, but there are a lot of very, very angry (and in some cases abusive) people in that constituency who want her gone because she’s a ‘traitor’ etc. A quick look at the local news Facebook would seem to support that. (Appreciate can’t simply judge an issue by taking note of angry people on Facebook and there may well be more to it.)

Looks like three wards votes for deselection. www.hulldailymail.co.uk/news/hull-east-yorkshire-news/diana-johnshon-labour-party-deselection-3295383
