Did I overreact to incident in restaurant?

Currently on holiday in Greece and was out last night for a meal with DP. It's quite normal here for cats to wander around the outside tables hoping to be given a bit of food. I like cats but I don't feed them as I know some taverna owners don't like it. We had finished our meal when a couple sat on the table next to us and started to feed the cats. I didn't have a problem with this until one poor cat started throwing up right underneath my chair. It really upset me and I didn't want to stay sitting where I was with cat sick on the floor so I told DP we would have to move to another table to finish our drinks.

The couple who had fed the cat saw me trying to move and heard me say (to my DP) that it was disgusting and I wasn't happy to stay sitting where I was. The couple glared at me as if I had gone mad and was making a big deal of it (whilst they happily carried on eating). I had a bit of a job getting away from our table as we were sat in a corner and the couple had put their bags on their spare chair which was blocking my exit. They made no attempt to move the chair to help me get out and carried on looking at me as if I was overreacting.

DP and I moved to another table and finished our drinks. The taverna owner came over to ask why we had moved so I explained and he apologised but I didn't blame him at all and smiled happily and said it was no problem.

DP seems to think that I overreacted and that we should have stayed at our table. He also wanted to order another round of drinks but I really wasn't happy to stay sitting where I was. The cat-feeders clearly thought I was bonkers.

Did I overreact? Would you have stayed sitting there with cat sick under your chair?

Some harsh responses here. I’m not sure if you ‘overreacted’. Some people seem to think it was just a bit of sick and you were precious. Even if you were overreacting by some commentators standards that’s your right. You were out in a restaurant for dinner. What’s completely wrong is the feeder twats reactions. They probably felt judged and went on the attack. Well tough shit. If you want to move you can move. They’ve got a fucking cheek being critical and should mint their own business

LoveThatJazz · 08/09/2019 07:20

YANBU at all.

Of course you weren't unreasonable to move, you didn't want to sit with cat vomit that you could put your feet in. Grim.

I can't believe anyone wouldn't move.

And the couple were really rude not to move their 'spare' chair out of your way and shoot daggers at you. I can see why you cut the night short, it wouldn't have made for a nice atmosphere! Hope you have a better time tonight.

Were you dramatic and made it a performance? If not tell your partner to grow some balls

DontForgetToDeadhead · 08/09/2019 07:24

Not an over reaction to move table. Starting a thread about it is an over reaction though.

Ffsnosexallowed · 08/09/2019 07:29

Not am overreaction to move tables. However, when we've been in Greece the taverna owners haven't minded cat feeding, done positively encourage feeding the restaurant cats. We revisited one regularly because of the beautiful well fed black cat which hung around.

AsTheWorldTurns · 08/09/2019 07:31

Your husband would rather sit next to cat sick than potentially offend two strangers who you've never seen before and never will again?

Snort.

Yoohoo16 · 08/09/2019 07:32

You overreacted. It’s a bit of cat sick on the floor. On your table I could understand.

Oliversmumsarmy · 08/09/2019 07:35

I have cats. When they throw up it is hardly a huge pool that you would be wading through. It doesn't really smell.

I feel sorry for the poor cat when you left.

PurpleFlower1983 · 08/09/2019 07:36

It does sound a bit like you were making it a bit more dramatic than it needed to be.

daisypond · 08/09/2019 07:37

Of course you weren’t unreasonable to move.

Dongdingdong · 08/09/2019 07:38

YADNBU OP! Why would anyone remain sitting next to a load of sick if they had the option to move? Confused Hopping onto another table is hardly a big deal and would have allowed the owner the space to clean it up.

Caucho · 08/09/2019 07:43

How’s starting a thread an over reaction? This is an anonymous Internet forum and people start threads about far more mundane shite. It’s just the equivalent of chewing the fat over a pint or bit of a gossip in a coffee shop. Are you one of the first world problems people. Like if someone mentions being skint and they say you should be grateful you’re not living in mud hut. The Monty Python poor Yorkshireman sketch springs to mind

Shmithecat2 · 08/09/2019 07:45

Yabu. It was cat sick, not nuclear waste.

LoveThatJazz · 08/09/2019 07:47

I feel sorry for the poor cat when you left.

I was waiting for a poster to say something along the lines of 'YABU not to take the cat to the vet.'

amysaurus87 · 08/09/2019 07:49

I'd have moved, cat sick stinks.

FredaFrogspawn · 08/09/2019 07:50

Sorry for the poor cat when you left.

I expect the cat got over the emotional trauma.

They shouldn’t have fed the cat in the taverna, but taken good outside, a bit away from the restaurant to feed them if they wanted to provide sustenance.

You weren’t over reacting. I adore cats but their sick has no place in a restaurant. And they shouldn’t be fed at the table.

everyonecaneffoff · 08/09/2019 07:50

If you didn't want to sit next to cat sick it's fair enough to move to another table. But the cat feeders may have thought you meant they were disgusting for feeding the cats as they might not have been aware of the cat throwing up. So as you stood up to move to another table you could have cheerily said that you were moving because one of the cats had been sick under your chair and then told a member of staff before a new customer turned up and stood in the cat sick while sitting down.

dudsville · 08/09/2019 07:51

You didn't over react to want to move, but everyone can let this go now. If your oh carries on just ask him to let it go.

Broken11Girl · 08/09/2019 07:51

You did overreact, it's just cat sick. The staff would've cleaned it up. I have cats and it doesn't stink and isn't a lot, it's not as if it was human vomit.
That said people who feed the cats are dicks, poor things get nothing then a ton of good very quickly from diners that they shouldn't have. People give bread, olives etc Hmm No wonder the poor thing was sick. Donate to a charity if you want to help them, or even get cat food.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 08/09/2019 07:52

YANBU.

Cat sick stinks and the smell would have made me feel ill, as well as seeing the cat retching.

While I'm eating I don't want piss / shit / puke anywhere near me thank you Hmm

Caucho · 08/09/2019 07:58

You should have just stabbed the cat with a dinner fork and then they’d have something to really complain about ha ha

DriftingLeaves · 08/09/2019 08:01

It isn't an over reaction to not want to sit by cat sick.

Daft that anyone would think so. The smell is enough to put you off.

Sorrysorrysosorry · 08/09/2019 08:01

I have a cat. I have to clean up its occasional vomit.
I wouldn’t want to sit in a restaurant with cat sick under my chair but then I wouldn’t want a fuss so I would probably just make DH swap seats with me or move my chair to the other side of the table.

simplekindoflife · 08/09/2019 08:01

I'd have moved too. Who wants to sit next to a pile of sick at a restaurant?! Cat, dog or otherwise!

The other couple were bonkers for giving you dirty looks. Their reaction was very strange.

Northernsoullover · 08/09/2019 08:07

I cannot believe how many people here would be happy to sit above a puddle of cat puke Confused
I'd probably end up putting my feet in it. I'd have moved and not said why.
