Dogs barking

I know I probably am BU but I just need to vent. I'm tired.

DS 15 months is a light sleeper. I came home from work at half 9, DS woke at 9:45 and is still awake now. There is a dog constantly barking. It's incessant, loud and it's keeping DS awake. AIBU to feel extremely annoyed? Blush

I won't be saying anything to the neighbour, but I do wonder why they can't do something about the noise.

Perhaps your neighbour has gone out and is unaware of their barking dog. I would be stressed in your position too though. and if it became a regular occurrence would have to say something to the owner. I hope it stops for you soon, if it hasn't already.

My neighbours dog use to bark constantly I was glad when someone finally reported it, I know because she asked me if it was me! She was a few doors down aswell yet it was still so loud.

Durgasarrow · 08/09/2019 02:52

I think that is pretty unreasonable.

JollyRocker · 08/09/2019 03:00

Try a bit of white noise to drown out the barks, a fan, a heater, something that buzzes or hums- my kids can’t sleep without them on New Years with all the fireworks!

StoneofDestiny · 08/09/2019 03:26

Totally anti social to let dogs bark continuously - tell the owners!

RebootYourEngine · 08/09/2019 04:15

This would drive me bonkers and I think I would have to report it. There is a dog next door to my friend that barks constantly. It barks at every little thing from people walking past, my friend in her own garden, the birds, the rain etc.

HouseworkAvoider10 · 08/09/2019 04:32

Report it.

Weston14 · 08/09/2019 04:32

YANBU. I'm on a work placement at the moment in another country and I'm staying in an apartment provided by my employer. Across the road is another apartment building with balconies overlooking the road, like mine, and on one of these balconies there are three (maybe even more actually) yappy little dogs that bark-bark-bark all day and night. Thankfully I'm working full time but on the rare occasion I'm in the apartment during the day if I sit on my balcony I can see dogs running around on their balcony with the door shut which leads me to believe the owner goes to work and just locks them out all day on this tiny balcony. If the flats over the road are anything like mine they're very small (think hotel room with kitchenette) so it is unspeakably cruel to be raising so many dogs in such a tiny space Sad. If I was at home I'd have a good mind to call the RSPCA. Strangely the locals of the country I'm in are known as dog lovers but in my experience they like the "optics" of owning a cute little dog (and they're always little, you never see a Labrador or an Alsatian) but not the day-to-day reality of it; the streets are absolutely covered in dog shit, for instance.

Charlieiscool · 08/09/2019 05:37

The RSPCA won’t do anything. There’s no law against keeping dogs outside and who are you supposed to report a barking dog to?

Alicewond · 08/09/2019 05:43

I would mention it to your neighbour, maybe unaware

BitOfFun · 08/09/2019 05:47

Certainly speak to your neighbour- it's very rude to let your dog bark continuously at that time of night.

I did have to laugh at "Report them" though- who to, the Stasi?

ProperVexed · 08/09/2019 06:39

Pp are asking who to report the dogs to. Surely a barking dog can be considered a noise nuisance and therefore reported to environmental health dept at the LA.

adaline · 08/09/2019 06:47

You certainly can report barking dogs - environmental health are the ones to speak to.

But to take it further you'll need to prove that it's continuous and anti-social. Dogs bark and it's considered reasonable up to a point.

Mine barks when we get home from work and when people go past the garden gate. He's a dog - it's what they do. I don't let him bark for hours or anything and bring him in ASAP.

But a few barks from an ordinarily quiet dog? I'm afraid nobody will really take any interest unless it's continuous.

UncomfortableSilence · 08/09/2019 06:59

Our direct neighbour lets her dog out every night about 9pm and then shuts the back door and it barks non stop for at least 1 1/2-2 hours, it's not fair particularly on DD who is in the back bedroom, she also leaves it most of the day and when I come home from work I can hear it barking in the house, it seems very stressed poor thing.

DH did say yesterday about having a word but she is very unfriendly so I don't think it will go well.

starfishcoffee · 08/09/2019 10:43

Thanks for your responses. I'm glad I'm not being totally U. The dog was barking until about 2:30, thankfully DS managed to sleep before then. I assume that the owners were out and left the dog outside.

I'm hoping that this is a one-off, I don't want to cause an upset but it did really piss me off and I do understand that dogs will bark.

My neighbours over thr back have several dogs and puppies all year round which live outside in pens. (Yes I know but who do I report this to? No one seems to care) they bark day and night. And I do mean at ALL hours.

White noise pretty much completely drowns them out as long as the window is shut. If this becomes an ongoing problem defintely play a (fairly loud) video or recording of a large fan or get a white noise machine.

The council won't help you in my experience. And people who do this are inconsiderate arses who won't care.

Hopefully it was a one off but I'd be ready just in case. Good luck

PumpkinP · 08/09/2019 11:52

The council that’s who! It’s a noise nuisance, it states it in my tenancy agreement.
