Book suggestions for a reluctant 13 year old girl

Can anyone suggest books for a 13 year old girl who is a bit of a reluctant reader (prefers to be glued to YouTube).

I'm trying to get my daughter into the habit of reading at night before bed. It's a bit of a struggle and I don't know where to start.

Most things by John Green
Things that have been made into films or TV series such as:
Series of Unfortunate Events
Maze Runner series
The Hate U Give

Depends entirely on interests of your dd...

Graphic novels? Audio books? Non fiction?

It's going to be hard to advise without knowing a bit more about your daughter. Is she a fluent reader or does she need an 'easier' read? Is she interested in anything in particular?

Good point about the non-fiction.
Try something like Knowledge is beautiful.

Mac47 · 07/09/2019 10:34

The Geek Girl series?

redappleandaquamarinebow1987 · 07/09/2019 10:59

What is she interested in? What movies does she enjoy?

HiJenny35 · 07/09/2019 11:23

I wouldn't make her. At that age I hated reading, if someone had forced me I would have hated it even more. Audio book?

Crystal87 · 07/09/2019 11:51

Agree with above poster. Dome people just don't like reading and don't get the same enjoyment and escapism from it that others do.
There's loads of teen fiction out there that are light and easy to read without much concentration. I used to enjoy Jacqueline Wilson's books for older readers and Cathy Cassidy.

DD2 has always been a reluctant reader, and we have used audio books a lot over the years. Audio books help with themes and language and sentence construction if not with actual reading, spelling or punctuation.

But in her teens she has got into the teen dystopian books:
Divergent series, Hunger Games, Noughts & Crosses, and recently Maze Runner.

Try a graphic novel. We loved Sisters by Raina Teiglemeyer (spelling of last name is a guess there sorry) and she also did one called Smile, which was also excellent.

Pratchett's Discworld?

Witchinaditch · 07/09/2019 13:38

The help or to kill a mocking bird.

need more info what she likes.
Easy snippet reading like Calvin & Hobbes comes to mind.

One.. come to think of it. Easy read, good literature AND a great story.

Cherub or anything by Robert Muchamore
If I was ever struggling to find inspiration to read I would reread them
