To suggest present ideas for my 40th bday?

Family is asking me to give them suggestions and inlaws say they want to buy me 'something special' - lucky me! But I can't think what to ask for!

I'm trying to think of things I wouldn't normally buy for myself or maybe an 'experience'. Any suggestions? What did you get for your 40th?

I want delicious pies delivered to my house, and a massive fabulous cake that I can stuff into my face with copious quantities of champagne. Followed by being left alone all night to read a book.

Leeds2 · 06/09/2019 23:03

Afternoon tea at a posh London restaurant.
Weekend away.
Zoo keeper for a day experience.
Cookery books.
Coffee machine.
Walk over the O2 experience.
Nice wine glasses.
Wine.
Trip to GoApe!
Trip to Airkix in Milton Keynes (flying in a wind tunnel).
A globe.

Dairymilkfordinner · 06/09/2019 23:08

Loving all of these! (Except anything to do with heights!)

And, yes, of course, face-stuffing fabulous cake and champagne goes without saying, surely?

I wouldn’t rely on other people facilitating the cake and champagne. If you don’t explicitly ask for it you may not get it! A good cake can cost £50 or more.

Some jewellery?

Hecateh · 06/09/2019 23:18

You could put a 'wish list' on Amazon, obviously making sure there are plenty of cheap 'gifts' or nik naks . plenty of things for under a tenner that would be fun things to have but that you wouldn't buy yourself

HerkyBaby · 06/09/2019 23:24

What about your own shed/ hut. A place you can decorate to your own taste with a big squashy sofa, a small wood burner, throws, cushions and a table piled high with books to read. You will need a nice rug and some lovely slippers as well as a little kettle and a special mug. For the walls you might want some bunting or pictures of lovely scenes in old frames. You will also need a lock for the door as this is YOUR present. Oh and don’t forget the galoshes by your back door along with a torch so that you can nip out whatever the weather and day or night whenever the mood takes you.

My 40th is coming up soon too, and dh is asking for ideas. I've given plenty of hints over the past few months but it seems I'm expected to organise my own birthday, as well as everyone else's 🙄 I've got enough on right now without looking around for presents for myself
Sorry to put a downer 😂

Dairymilkfordinner · 06/09/2019 23:26

Ooooh love the hut idea...but if have to also ask for a bigger garden to put it inGrin

I got an ebike for mine. Best present ever.

Walnutwhipster · 07/09/2019 04:19

I think it depends on what sort of money you think they have in mind, which in itself is difficult to know. Are we talking £50, a few hundred or thousands? A pp suggested a zookeeper experience. We did this as a surprise for DD last year for her Birthday but we all loved it. It was an amazing day from start to finish. It cost £200 for DD alone so it can be quite expensive.

commanderdalgleish · 07/09/2019 05:06

I need to follow this.

I would like a see by Chloe cross body bag at the moment. But I might change my mind.

Actually I want an emerald and diamond ring from dp but he refuses to buy rings (I think it's too close to an engagement ring...) I've shown my daughter which one it is I the window so she can make him buy it (she's 4!)

I have a v high maintenance baby and had no break from him in nearly a year so I would quite like someone to arrange a party and cake for me without me having to think about it. But there's hardly any chance of that.

It would be nice to have something to keep, hopefully my mum will get me a nice bit if jewellery!

burnttoastandjam · 07/09/2019 05:13

For My fortieth, my friends all clubbed together to buy me a cuckoo clock, which I absolutely love (it has a night time mode as well).
It makes me really smile.

Other friends bought me and DH a his and hers massage treatment with a glass of champagne at the local spa.

HenriettaH · 07/09/2019 05:34

I'd like a spa day and a weekend at some retreat. Never been one for material things.

clucky3 · 07/09/2019 06:32

Family ask me every year what I want and every year I tell them not to get me anything because I'm torn. What I actually want is someone to give enough of a shit about me to take some time to think about what I might like and purchase said thoughtful gift. Yet unless i very specifically tell them about a specific item that I'd like, I generally get a pile of generic crap that reveals how little they know me/how little thought they put in.

I can handle it from the kids because they are led by clueless DH but the fact that he doesn't know what I like or want after 20 years depresses me. I'll be 40 later this year, currently contemplating whether to buy myself something nice or explain the above specifically and see what they come up with.

clucky3 · 07/09/2019 06:36

FWIW if I had to write a list for others I'd love:

Clarins hand cream
Everyman vouchers
Jewellery (I would be specific)
Afternoon tea
Beautiful soap like Yorkshire soap co or similar
Gin

Divebar · 07/09/2019 06:42

For mine I was treated to a weekend in Barcelona ( sleeper train from Paris) and received a Mont Blanc pen, a vintage 1930s watch and an Alexander McQueen scarf as the main presents.

Charles11 · 07/09/2019 06:48

A decent camera to get into photography, travel to nice places and take amazing photos.

Holiday vouchers with a specific company like Trailfinders do you can book a few days away doing something different.

You are Withnail and I claim my £5 Grin
