On Monday morning when I was walking my dog, I spotted that my next door neighbour's side gate was open and her dog had gotten out. I brought him back in, closed the door and covered it with one of the kid's bikes in the driveway.

I texted my neighbour to tell her and she responded saying she was on holidays and her Dad would come over later and close it. Here we are FIVE days later and she still isn't back! The dog has been by himself since then and is crying for large parts of the day, he sounds so distressed. He has no kennel; rather a pet carrier with the door left open. His bowls have no food/water and I haven't seen anyone come to visit him all week (granted I'm at work during the day but I'm home at lunch).

I want to report this but my H2B is insisting that I don't as he doesn't want to create some sort of feud with the neighbours. I don't want to cause drama either but I feel that this just isn't right!!!!! PS - I'm also considering trying to take the dog into my house.

The owner has just arrived home. Thank you to everyone who helped.

What a poor sad life for that dog abandoned while they are away. Neighbour sounds awful with that reply and to even think its acceptable in the first place. I'd keep an eye out and report if it's left like that again. Although sounds like rspca won't do anything anyway.

Piglet208 · 08/09/2019 19:36

I am astonished that people on this thread think it is acceptable for a dog to be left outside 24 hours a day with only a "pet carrier" for shelter and one visit a day of 15 mins to give food and water. Considering most dog rescues will only rehome a dog to a family where someone is home most of the time and where a dog is left for a maximum of 4 hours a day I am surprised the RSPCA were not more concerned.

Thereisasystem · 08/09/2019 19:46

It's horrible that he was left but well done OP for keeping an eye out and giving him water. Assume the visiting person fed the dog..

Ginger1982 · 08/09/2019 19:58

I could never have a dog and leave him or her outside permanently. Poor thing.

PhilSwagielka · 08/09/2019 20:00

YANBU. Call the RSPCA and ask them for advice, they might be able to help?

RiddleMeThis3 · 08/09/2019 20:13

@Piglet208 I'm really surprised too but it seemed like she was more concerned about the time it might take to investigate an allegation that had (in her words) no solid evidence. I was only suspicious according to her.

@Thereisasystem I threw over a dog bone toy that I put treats in; dog biscuits and pieces of chicken. Thought it might keep him busy too since he hadn't been mentally stimulated either.

Any update on this poor dog?

RiddleMeThis3 · 13/09/2019 21:07

@orangeicecream He's still getting left outside for hours on end, even when there are people in the house!! I rang RSPCA back and they took my details 🤷‍♀️

Try your local Dog Warden, usually more pro active than Rspca
