To think the people who crashed into me are gonna pull a fast one?

A few days ago I was turning right on a roundabout near my home and the person in the left lane (turning left) drove into my lane damaging my car. Luckily no one was hurt. It happens all the Tim won that roundabout as people are lazy and cut straight across to the left turning, not realising someone's in the right lane. I have at least 3 near misses a week and this was the first actual accident.

Swapped numbers with the woman who crashed into me, who I had to explain to why it was her fault and not mine. For some reason I'm in contact with her husband who won't give me their policy number until they've "spoken to their insurance adviser". I need their policy details to get my courtesy car and for my claim. I've told him today it's all I need, should be in their insurance documents and he doesn't need to speak to an advisor before he gives it to me.

AIBU to think they're trying to pull a fast one? Why wouldn't he just give me their details? I've never crashed or claimed before, bang goes almost 20 years no claims!

Report it to the police - all accidents should be reported. You ahve their nymberplate? that will galvinise them.

It is the law that you swap details. All you can do is give their details to your insurance, it is thier job to chase this up

Gonna throw it out there - why do you not have a protected no claims?

Totaldogsbody · 06/09/2019 11:44

Do a Google search "how do I find out if someone has car insurance " you will find out how to get their insurance details. I think there may be a charge for this and you probably need their Reg No.

AccioCats · 06/09/2019 11:51

Oh I hate this too... usually when people are in the left lane but going straight ahead on the roundabout - so many people seem to forget there’s a right hand lane the moment they actually get onto the roundabout and cut into it, rather than remaining in their correct lane

Hope you sort it. One thing though - hopefully it won’t occur again but if you’re involved in an accident, don’t admit or accuse liability. That’s for the insurers to determine. I wonder whether you agitated the women by explaining to her why it was her fault. I know it must have been bloody tempting, but really you should just exchange details and nothing more

PinkLacy · 06/09/2019 11:53

If you have their reg number you can access their insurance info online

AmIThough · 06/09/2019 11:56

Just give your insurance company the reg plate - they'll do the rest.
If they say you need the policy number before they can proceed tell them the other party are refusing to give it to you.

They're breaching their insurance policy by not declaring it.

To the PP suggesting you call the police, it's not a police matter. Accidents have to be reported to the insurer, not the police.

familycourtq · 06/09/2019 11:59

Your Insurers and/or the Police can chase up the other party's insurance details.

Case law makes it tricky but not impossible to get a 100% payout at roundabouts . I wouldn't be mentioning previous near misses or the fact that it's notorious - that will count against you as (however unreasonably) the other side will say you should have been looking out for people like the woman who hit you who can't fucking drive properly.

Do you have pictures/dashcam/witnesses? Anything will help.

museumum · 06/09/2019 12:01

your insurance company should be able to find all the info. that's what you pay them for.

SoManyUnknowns · 06/09/2019 12:05

You dont need a policy number. Just give your insurance company their car reg and leave it to them to fight it out

Lifecraft · 06/09/2019 12:05

Report it to the police - all accidents should be reported.

Wrong, police will not get involved in a non injury accident where both parties stopped and exchanged contact details. Purely a civil matter and not one to report to police.

WhoKnewBeefStew · 06/09/2019 12:06

Speak to the police. I had exactly the same thing happen to me. My local plod nipped round and had a quick chat with them and passed on their insurance details.

shearwater · 06/09/2019 12:07

What the others said. No need to deal further with the husband directly.

NoWayNoHow · 06/09/2019 12:17

When someone crashed into me, I didn't need their insurance details - make, model and reg number were enough for my insurance company to locate them.

Myriade · 06/09/2019 12:23

When I had an accident, i didn’t need their insurance details. Just the car registration number.

One thing I’ve learnt is to take a photo of what happened. Stops many discussions and arguments!

But please do report it even if you dint have all the details.

duffyluth · 06/09/2019 12:48

Please don't waste police time in this fgs.

Why are your insurance not sorting it out for you? That's what you pay them for!

Dyrne · 06/09/2019 12:56

Another one wondering why you’re doing this yourself - surely your insurer will deal with it?

adaline · 06/09/2019 13:06

Give their registration number to the insurance company - they'll sort the rest.

BazzleJet · 06/09/2019 13:28

Be aware that this could be a scam - next thing you know the other party could be claiming for damages for injuries. It's you saying there are lots of near misses on this roundabout which raises suspicions. Cash for crash I think they're known as.

hellsbellsmelons · 06/09/2019 13:39

I really hope you took lots of pictures.
You only need the reg number.
Get your insurance company to do the rest.

whattodowith · 06/09/2019 13:41

I hope you took the reg number, that’s all you need. Give it your insurer and they’ll do the rest.

swimlyn · 06/09/2019 14:02

You dont need a policy number. Just give your insurance company their car reg and leave it to them to fight it out
You would think that, but no, Aviva/Norwich Union told us to eff off with our rock solid claim (other party asleep at the wheel) and we had to do ALL of the work ourselves, against Saga.

Had to do our own County Court claim. Absolutely NO assistance from our insurers of 10 years. I give no loyalty to any insurer now. They are the crooks.
