To think this headline about 'white children' is misleading?

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/09/05/white-children-fall-joint-bottom-place-sats-official-figures/

The article talks about how "white children fall joint bottom place" in SATS.

I just think that's an awful spin to put on the data. Further reading shows that last year, there was an attainment gap between black children sitting the SATS and white children. This year both groups have increased the % of children meeting expected standards and now the attainment gap has narrowed and the same percentage of black children met expected standards as white children.

Surely a better spin would be "Higher percentage of children meeting expected standards all round and attainment gap narrowing."

I mean, there's still a way to go as there's still an attainment gap between boys and girls etc. but I feel this reporting is at best misleading and at worst racist.

YANBU. What a horribly divisive way of putting it.

Also totally misleading as some black students (e.g. ghanian) are in the top performing groups and some black students (carribean i think?) the bottom.
Also, there's a lot of difference between white english and white eastern european first generation immigrant with EAL.

Unfortunately that's the Torygraph for you, YANBU.

Yes, good point museumum.

I can just imagine the likes of my grandparents seeing this article headline and using it to gossip with their friends about how schools are only geared up to help non-white children nowadays and this is proof that white children are suffering.

I'm a school Governor and can hopefully put a different spin on this. Schools have to ensure that all children are progressing and developing. One way they do this is by measuring categories e.g. Pupil premium children Vs all kids, English as a second language Vs all children etc In the last few years there has been a marked issue with white, Pupil premium, boys not meeting the development targets. The headline I think is referring to the fact the progress/attainment gap is not yet resolved. It is something schools are working on.

Thank you user - good to hear a sensible explanation.

You're reading a racist newspaper, and are surprised they put a racist tinge on it, stop supporting racists and then you won't notice.

Fair point sirfredfred. I genuinely hadn't realised that The Telegraph was to be grouped in with the likes of The Daily Mail and The Sun. The article popped up below my Google search engine and I made the mistake of clicking on it.

I do find it useful to read such things occasionally though, as it shows me where my grandparents get certain 'facts' from and is therefore easier for me to debunk them in discussion.
