People that don't have tv's

Teach me your ways. My toddler has broken my tv. We only own the one. I think he's thrown something at it and cracked the screen. Past three days not really missed it myself. There are times when I plod the toddler in front tv to make dinner, phone calls ext. that's the bit I'm struggling with. I'm going back into education on Monday and trying to see this as a positive. End of day it's so easy to just plod myself down when I could be doing other things.

Haven't owned a TV for 10+ years

Plenty of time to do other things, hobbies, out of the house, read, radio etc

Don't miss it

ineedaholidaynow · 06/09/2019 17:05

I too think that a tv can be more social than other forms of screens.

Love watching comedies with DS(14), he has a great teenage sense of humour Smile

Eli38 · 06/09/2019 17:06

We just don't have a TV, and our kids don't watch anything. They play outside, read books, do crafts, spend time with friends and more. It's not that complicated.

nilcarborundum · 06/09/2019 17:27

I haven't had a tv for about 5 years, and in fact I can't stand going to someone else's house where it's on all the time! I listen to classic fm, read a lot, do gardening, walk my dogs, cook, my time is full!
Having said that I will very occasionally watch something on my iPad, the last thing I watched was The Handmaids tale as I'd read the book Smile

sweeneytoddsrazor · 06/09/2019 17:35

Having a tv doesn't stop you doing anything else though. It is just another form of entertainment that people may choose to use. There is an awful lot of snobbery regarding tv but you can pick what you watch the same as you can pick what you read.

PuppyMonkey · 06/09/2019 18:41

Agree Sweeney, imagine people wearing it as a badge of honour that they never read books, they’re too busy, there’s too much crap writing, they can’t beat to be sitting still all that time.Grin

I mean, do what you like but TV at the moment is the shiz - you’re missing out on some fantastic stuff.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 06/09/2019 19:09

We don't have a tv.

Since the twins were born, elder DD is allowed to watch some old children's programmes on the iPad at times of particular stress (i.e. wrangling the twins into high chairs) but than that, none of us watch anything.

Too much bloody housework plus prefer R4!

Elphame · 06/09/2019 19:11

There may well be some good stuff but having had to sit through the dross that my mother watches when I visit her I simply don't have the interest to find it.

I have been told of programs that I probably would enjoy but 10 minutes later I've forgotten all about them. I'll remember book recommendations though. TV just isn't on my radar.

If I want down time then some cheap chick lit and a glass of wine works very well.

BogglesGoggles · 06/09/2019 19:17

I don’t have a tv (laptop netflixer). Recently stayed in holiday flat with a tv and honestly it’s different. Much nicer watching tv on and actual tv.

Moominfan · 06/09/2019 19:23

Horse4course yes that!

Jigsaws aren't quite doing the job when I just need an hour

What I don't get is the snobbery of people declaring they don't watch TV, and then adding in they watch Netflix, etc on laptop or ipad. It really is no different. And if you can easily find good things to watch on Netflix, you can easily find good things on the TV. Watching "dross" is a choice.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 07/09/2019 13:19

I totally agree, @jennymanara but I do think watching dross is an easier choice to make if you have live TV rather than just netflix/catch-up as you can end up scrolling through the channels much more often - but maybe that's just me?

LisaSimpsonsbff · 07/09/2019 13:20

I also agree that the snobbery is ridiculous. I'd rather watch the Handmaid's Tale than read cheap chick lit, and I think it's hard to argue that the latter is the culturally superior choice!

onioncrumble · 07/09/2019 15:34

They are dicks

Elphame · 07/09/2019 19:15

Well I did read the book of the Handmaidens Tale! Does that count?

Currently reading some 18CE translations of Welsh documents on medieval grammar - I really do need my Phil Rickman as downtime.

(And yes it is my mother's choice to watch the dross)

I've never said it's culturally superior not to watch TV - all I said is that it does not interest me. I have always preferred text media. TV/Video goes in one side and out the other. I retain very little of what I watch whilst my recall of text based material is close to 100%.

If you work in a mars bar factory, the last thing that you want to eat is a mars

So it depends what job people have

It's good to have a work/home separation

Witchend · 08/09/2019 18:37

We don't have a TV. I occasionally watch a dvd on the computer.
There are a couple of iplayer programmes we might watch.
We waste a lot of time doing other things on the computer.

isadoradancing123 · 08/09/2019 21:01

Do people think it just sounds good to say they dont watch tv and do arts and fucking crafts and jugsaws instead

PuppyMonkey · 08/09/2019 21:53

Jigsaws yes. They’re the cultural future Grin
