To ask if you've ever been made redundant

Did you know it was happening or was it totally it of the blue? I worry how Brexit will affect my job as I work in finance.

We have already opened an office in Dublin and some of our funds have merged out.

AIBU to be worried? Management don't seem to say much about it.

I was made redundant earlier this year. I was a week away from returning from maternity leave. We had been told the changes were happening, but they were not confirming who or what roles were redundant. I found out with 4 weeks to go before my daughter started nursery. I ended up having to reduce her hours or risk loosing her place if we pulled her out. Wasn't ideal but we've made it work now!

Once in 2009 after the banking crash. Everyone except me and the directors were made redundant a year and a bit before. I was about to go on ML, they got a temp to replace me. I went back after ML expecting to be let go and wasn't for months so I stopped expecting it then boom, job gone.

The second time was 2018. That was a total surprise.

First time out of the blue, but big company with good contract and I’d worked there a good few years so got a good settlement.

Second time could see it coming for months as working conditions were systematically worsened, I got legal minimum (one week for each year of employment, capped then at £260 per week) plus one month’s pay in lieu of notice.

Twice. First time I walked into another job, the second time I went self-employed. Now semi-retired. Redundancy was, looking back, a good thing for me.

Six times. I work in finance. Five of those were between 2007-2009. Was very stressful.

Both myself and my daughter were made redundant from poundworld when it went under .we worked in different shops in the same town and hers was closed about 2 weeks before mine.my manager was fantastic and got permission for her to work at my store until we closed too.was a horrible time because we kept hearing that we might be saved from administration by a buyer but it never happened sadly.we were both devastated as we loved our jobs and it really was like being part of a family.nothing has been quite the same for either of us ever since.still in touch with some of my old colleagues and they are lovely people.still miss it 😢

I have - got a redundancy payout then the company found me another job internally.

Parky04 · 06/09/2019 09:04

Twice previously. One out of the blue but with a very long notice period on the other. If Labour win an election, I will be made redundant again.

jay55 · 06/09/2019 09:06

First time was expected, a massive company bought out our small company and then refused to sell our system to their clients. So it was clear we'd only have work until our existing clients were up and running.

The second time was totally out the blue. Whole department was off-shored almost overnight and we went on gardening leave straightaway.
That time worked out for me, I got a job straight away that paid a lot more and was headhunted a year later to an amazing contract.

I never have, but DH was made redundant twice when he worked in the city. The first time he got lots of notice and had a job lined up to start straight away so it wasn't a particularly big deal. The second time was a 'called to the meeting room at 11, everyone walking out with their stuff at 12') thing and that was a lot more traumatic, and finally made up his mind to leave behind entirely a career that he'd been unsure about for a while. He's now a very rare thing, a very happy school teacher!

I was made redundant when the recession hit in 2008. I worked for a company whose biggest customers were house building companies. The company went from multi million pound turnover and 7 national offices employing 1000 people to one office employing about 120 in just over a year. A lot of people lost their jobs. They let me go 3 days before my 2 year anniversary so I got no redundancy pay. That still smarts.

Lobelia123 · 06/09/2019 09:12

Yes.
I was completely blindsided (and in fact had been working on the change management team mapping out the process and liasing with staff about the changes). It was a completely clinical decision and executed with brutal efficiency. I felt like a pariah as everyone avoided me and seemed afraid to be too sympathetic....its like they thought they would catch something! On my last day suddenly I got a lot of mails and phone calls but it all felt a bit staged and in fact the time in the run up to my last day was a very lonely time where I felt extremely isolated. However, I picked myself up and focused on getting my bills paid....took on finding another job as my fulltime job (although I thoroughly enjoyed some aspects of being at home, like being able to collect my little boy from school instead of sending him to aftercare for four or five hours a day). I ended up being personally referred for another job by two people I had worked for previously who recommended me, and ended up in the position Im in today, which to be honest is so much better than where I was. It ended up being a positive thing, although painful at the time and I spent a lot of nights worrying how I was going to pay my bills.
It can end up teaching you a LOT about yourself, and it can be the opportunity to ring in the changes and do something positive in your life and career, but make no mistake, it is also frightening, stressful, and deeply unpleasant, so prepare yourself for a deep emotional journey. Best of luck xxx

Once. Fairly out of the blue but we'd been expecting a company move for a while.
8 months notice of the move, 80% of the staff left at that point, about 7 of us moved over - i didn't expect to stay longer than a year because that was my final chance for a pay out.
Nice fat pay out, took an extended "holiday" (daytime TV and not much else, it was great) then got another job with an ex-colleague in a similar industry.

Waiting for details of the payout and so on was excruciating and stressful because i was part of the group lobbying the employer for the package.
Worked out ok for most of us in the end (one or two are struggling to find work after leaving after the move, those who left before the move are all employed and most happy with it)
