To leave it blank

Writing here as more traffic. I am applying for a support job in a religious school. On the application form they have the usual bit where you tick your gender, sexual orientation and religion.
Im not religious, i grew up in the church but chose to move away from that belief and currently dont have a belief although im not anti religion.
On the application form do i leave the religion box unticked? Am i being unreasonable? Would a religious school only employ religious staff? I cant think that they would or even could be i really want this job.
Thanks

Religious schools prefer religious staff.

But that's a typical equal opportunity form?

So leave it unticked or 'prefer not to say'?

Mitebiteatnite · 05/09/2019 09:13

DCs are at a C of E school, and only a handful of the staff are religious. (small village, everyone knows everyone and it came up in conversation once)

Just leave it blank. Or write 'none'.

ghostyslovesheets · 05/09/2019 09:15

Tick what you like - that form is anonymous and only used to gather information about the range/type of applicants NOT to be used in the selection of applicants

Do you mean the school is particularly religious (in which case you are probably on a road to nowhere, whether state or private) or that it's a faith school within the state system?

If the latter, they have to welcome applications from any faith or none, but can specify certain posts as requiring their faith (typically head, maybe other SMT and RE staff). So you should be OK. But do check which if any posts are designated as faith ones - in case it limits your opportunities for progression (without moving school)

Saddler · 05/09/2019 09:29

If you're not the same religion or denomination as the school (C ofE aside) you'll struggle to get the job 'anonymous' or not.

SexTrainGlue · 05/09/2019 09:29

Should have also said, if it is a designated post, it should specify that in the ad. If it does not, it would be unlawful to discriminate.

But staff will be expected to uphold the ethos of the school - have you the chance to find out in advance what it's like? Some are less religious in practice than some community-admissions schools, o ciderably more so.

I’m a Northern Irish prod and worked for a good while as a teacher in a Catholic secondary school. No one gave two hoots.

KUGA · 05/09/2019 09:38

If you dont get the job because your not religious that`s discrimination.
Wishing you all the best.

HiJenny35 · 05/09/2019 10:26

Faith schools CAN employ based upon your religion this is exempt from the discrimination rules. You can leave it blank but I would expect it to be addressed in the interview.
Government document surround the rules can be found at...

Its a Church of England school, academy school. No details of needing to have religion in the application so fingers crossed it will be fine

That’s just a mandatory equal opportunities form. The person who shortlists the candidates doesn’t get to see it, so it won’t affect your chances. Just tick ‘None’.

Thatagain · 05/09/2019 18:32

Depends on how you feel. Example is you can have faith and not be religious. Another one is you can be a Christian and not be religious. So it depends!
