To think my cat nipping me is a sign of affection?

We have a gorgeous Russian Blue cat who we got at 9 weeks old and is now just over a year old. She's an indoor cat.

She is a lovely, petite cat who comes to sleep on my chest/neck whenever I'm lying down. She's very independent and will only come for affection in the evenings/night time. However, she follows me around the house and will settle in whatever room that is, including the bathroom Blush

Sometimes she comes up to me meowing for attention, I'll stroke her and she'll nip at my hand gently then later chase after my feet. Now AIBU to think my cat's just being affectionate and trying to play? Or am I being completely naive here and she's plotting my downfall? 🤦🏼‍♀️

Mine doesn’t nip but will happily get you with her claws when she’s kneading at your bare skin!

Mine is very loving and follows us round the house miaowing for attention and wanting strokes. Except for first thing in the morning when she tries to knock us down the stairs if she hasn’t been fed yet.

hoxtonbabe · 04/09/2019 12:59

Lol@ stroke my belly but don’t touch my belly. This sounds like my cat!

Mine follows me all about too, the one I find most odd is when he follows me into the toilet when I’m busting to go and sits there watching me or when he decides to perch on the edge of the bath whilst we’re showering. He’s ALWAYS in between my legs when cooking hoping he can get some bits of chicken or something. This morning I found a random bbq spare rib bone.. I realised he must have fished it out the bin from when we had it yesterday.

When I was growing up we had a very petite, completely mad tortie. I was twelve when we got her as a tiny kitten and although she was the family cat we had a special bond.

I could write a book about her crazy ways, but one of the things she really loved to do was to hide under our garden hedge and jump out at the stream of girls walking past our house from the school up the road.

Every single afternoon she'd be there waiting. She'd leap, the latest victim would generally squeal and jump and she'd run back under the hedge to wait for the next one.

It wasn't a large school but those girls afforded her hours of fun.

Mine does it when he wants to be fed and I am in bed.

He also does it when he wants to play :)

MontStMichel · 04/09/2019 13:28

We have one, who lies on my chest, her nose and mouth dribbling on my face and then gives me a little nip on the nose, when I am asleep. As I am asleep, we assume its meant to be affection, because its hardly petting aggression!

SpoilsburyToastGirl · 04/09/2019 13:33

My Russian Blue goes as if he's going to nip me and then licks me all over like a maniac. He would lick me for hours. He also licks my face if I get close enough. He is a nutter.

fantasmasgoria1 · 04/09/2019 13:36

Yes it's just play. My kitten does it. She has loads of fuss then nips. She doesn't nip with force it's more like lightly rubbing her teeth on your skin. We call it giving us the mouth! She is 6 months and has never actually bitten us.

SpoilsburyToastGirl · 04/09/2019 13:40

My handsome nutter

Lol @pigsDOfly

That is hilarious Grin I can just imagine it

They really can be little shi*s when it comes to things like that. Lol, My one will be under the sofa for ages in quiet mode, I’m thinking he’s on my sons bed or somewhere else in the house curled up, then next thing I’ve jumped out my skin as he’s decided to nip at my ankles, which is worse when I don’t know he’s hiding under there.

Stompythedinosaur · 04/09/2019 13:45

My lovely boy definitely bites my feet as a sign of affection!

These two naughty boys do nip gently, but only if you aren't paying them enough attention Smile their other favourite trick is to try and knock your phone/book/the remote out of your hand so you can dedicate 100% of your time to them!

My cat is horrified. He caught me with his claw accidentally and hid under the sofa for an hour while crying HmmGrin
He has a specific "love mama" face that he does

Blueoasis · 04/09/2019 14:05

Mine likes play fighting with me. This does involve biting my hand and attacking my arm, but he's not aggressive about it. He'll spend hours each night doing that. Strange cats. Grin

My parents have a pair of kittens (M = black F = small pretty tabby) and the male loves to follow me around gently nibbling my feet. It’s either out of love or he wants me to break my neck so I never leave their flat.
My cat (chunky girl on sofa) doesn’t emerge from our bedroom until it’s almost evening time and then she has some cuddles before telling me it’s time for bed(!) and follows me around to make sure I actually do as I’m told.

Nipping is a sign of love and affection. My boys do it all the time.

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 04/09/2019 14:26

Mine comes up and nips me if I ever raise my voice or sound distressed –Google told me it's her checking that I'm ok!

Secretsloth · 04/09/2019 14:30

I lost my little one to cancer late last year but she was always full of surprises. These included wanting lots of fuss to deciding that shes suddenly had enough and must eat you hand as quickly as possible.

Her favorite game however was to jump onto a cabinet in the bathroom then on to the top of the door.....where she would wait until it was dark (middle of the night usually). She would then pounce on the head of anyone who walked into the bathroom......time and time again this gave me a middle of the night heart attack when the fluffy little git lept on my head.....she'd then run off down the stairs and im sure she had a little kitty laugh. God i miss my little fluffy girl.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 04/09/2019 15:09

Mine just does it because she can and I think secretly hates us. She’s a rescue from 4weeks old and doesn’t know how to cat! She sleeps on the dogs bed or full length in the middle of the floor, never goes on our lap or furniture and waits to jump on/harass the dog! Never gives any affection-and will only tolerate the odd head stroke whilst being fed but other than that will just bite!

Mine also a rescue from about 4 months old and is just learning to cat.

That's when she is not following the elderly rescue greyhound around.

Apart from the hand biting I think she is mostly learning to dog.
