To think it isn’t chicken pox?

DS (22 months) nursery called me yesterday PM to ask me to collect him with suspected chicken pox and advised I take him to a pharamacist for their opinion.
I did, pharmacist wasn’t convinced as he hadn’t as a temperature and had a few spots on his shoulder and 1 or 2 on his legs and one under each arm. He said that I will definitely be able to tell in 12 hours as it will have spread.
So this morning, there are no more spots. DS still doesn’t seem unwell in anyway and the spots that are there have faded to almost nothing!
The spots weren’t bothering him either - no itching etc.
WIBU to take him to nursery?? I might call them first... I have no experience with chicken pox though so I don’t want to make the wrong call!

My daughter 2 and a half. She often gets a rash or hives when she has a cold, it just seems to be part of her body's reaction to the virus. Does he have any other symptoms of a cold?
I would call the nursery and tell them what the pharmacist said. I wouldn't be surprised if they ask you to keep him off anyway though.

Doesn't sound like chicken pox to me. He would have more spots overnight and the spots that were there would be blistering not disappearing

Macandcheeseplease · 04/09/2019 07:16

Not unreasonable at all. Doesn't sound like chicken pox. Just tell nursery you sought medical advice and they said it's not CP.

SinkGirl · 04/09/2019 07:21

Could be chicken pox - my twins had no scratching or fever until a few days in. Spots were slow to develop in the first 1-2 days and then exploded.

Are they blisters? DT1’s looked like this at first.

Some of them look similar to that. Others look exactly like the insect bites that I got from being in the garden (with DS!)

beanbag yes, definitely mild cold symptoms... again I have the same cold as he does.

Not sure if relevant but we are both being treated for thrush as well (he hasn’t breastfed for over 2 weeks because of it!)

Chicken pox is a viral rash and their are other viral rashes that look very similar. It’s really difficult to tell early on. My children are very rashy and have been sent home from school/nursery with ‘chicken pox’ more than once.
The problem is that if it is chicken pox it is so infectious. Would you be able to keep him at home for today just to be sure?

ethelfleda · 04/09/2019 07:43

I’ve just called the nursery and explained to them and they said he is fine to go in?
So I’m thinking I will take him but work from home today so I can pick him up if I need to.

Sounds like the Chicken Pox my two had, very mild, not itchy, didnt feel unwell, not many spots.

SinkGirl · 04/09/2019 07:55

You may get lucky and just get a few - I thought we had but then it went mad. Lasted 10-12 days for each twin, fevers of over 40 on days 4 and 5, infections, the lot. We were unlucky though.

I’m surprised nursery agreed, but be prepared you may get another call today!

ethelfleda · 04/09/2019 07:57

I think I’m going to take him in and let them have a look at him again (and bring him back if they aren’t 100% sure!) and check and as you say, be prepared for another call if more spots come up!
Thanks everyone.

I really hope it’s not, and that if it is it’s mild (although not too mild as they may get it again!). Honestly chicken pox month was the worst month of parenting I’ve ever had.

If it is, I’d advise forgetting all the expensive special creams and gels and getting some Eurax cream (excellent anti itch cream) and some antihistamines - piriton does nothing for my two so I got some Phenergan liquid on the GP’s advice. Only gave half a dose as it’s sedating, but really helped them with the itching.

Best of luck Flowers
