Is 'over tall' a thing?

paintedfences · 03/09/2019 19:46

I have a baby boy who is 9 nearly 10 months old, and honestly he is ridiculously tall with a large head - he looks like an 18 month old! I get strangers commenting as well as my group of mum friends who all have babies the same age.

He's not remarkably chubby, but has a good 'cover' on him as the paediatric nurse said when I took him to be weighed a few months ago. He was 95th centile then, up from 75th a few months before which was up from 50th when he was just on milk.

I've got his 10 month review next week and am a bit nervous in case it's a problem as I've read some stuff on here about children being 'over tall' which is playing on my mind. I don't think I'm overfeeding him, he has breakfast lunch and dinner and no snacks, just milk.

Probably just being ridiculous after the 7th comment today, but hey ho.

Well, some kids are just tall. But being larger than average can be a sign of a medical condition such as autism.

They might want to investigate, but I'd imagine they'll just wait and see if anything else develops. Do you have any other concerns?

paintedfences · 03/09/2019 19:53

Bloody hell that's scared me! But no, no concerns. He's a very smiley little thing, babbles a lot, seems to be hitting all his milestones and has a very chill/calm temperament.

How tall are the two families. DSs are tall (90th and 95th) and skinny (50th) and people forever assume they’re much older than they are. But DH is the shortest man on his side at 6 foot and I’m 5’10” and he’s slim and I’m not overweight...so it’s not surprising.

bobstersmum · 03/09/2019 19:55

Never in my life heard of a link between autism and height!

Yogurtcoveredricecake · 03/09/2019 19:57

Tall baby then toddler here, not big but solid and heavy! DH is very tall though so it was always likely to happy.

paintedfences · 03/09/2019 19:58

My dad is 6 foot 1 as are most of my uncles that side and I'm 5 foot 9 though dh takes after his mum and is also 5 foot 9. His dad and brother are both 6 feet.

My 13 mo DS is 99th percentile. He's been a bit slower than his sibling on some physical things but still within normal range. The paediatrician said it's not surprising if a tall skinny baby with a big head is slower to walk when you think about how high his center of gravity is and how hard that makes balancing in order to walk etc.

PinkyU · 03/09/2019 19:59

I’ve heard of a link between ASD/C and larger than average head circumference but not height. Certainly not accurate for our lo who at almost 7 is 113cm.

Scruffalicious · 03/09/2019 19:59

I wouldn't worry about it. My youngest dc is on the 99.8th percentile for height, and my eldest is 96.5th. They're just tall.

BogglesGoggles · 03/09/2019 20:00

Where do you live? I’ve noticed that in less multicultural parts of the country the average height is very low.

JoJoSM2 · 03/09/2019 20:00

DS is getting investigated for some conditions. His height and weight are in proportion but both off the charts completely. He started wearing size 3 years clothes at about 11 months.

paintedfences · 03/09/2019 20:00

Just to say when I said he has a big head I don't mean it's is out of proportion with his body - just that because he's big it is too iykwim? I was trying to say 'he doesn't seem to be really fat/out of proportion' without saying it. Blush

My nephew is like this - he's been a little trucker practically since birth. He's developmentally totally normal, met all his milestones on time etc. He's just a very big baby!

Someone has to be the biggest, so I would try not to worry!

x2boys · 03/09/2019 20:01

My severely autistic child by contrast is very small for his age, I do know someone whose child has an over growth syndrome but it is very rare ,you might find he even out as he grows ,try not to worry to much at this stage

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 03/09/2019 20:04

My ds was in 9 - 12 month clothes at 4 months. And still in 9-12 month clothes at 13 months. At 6 he is pretty much exactly on the 50th centile line.

Kids grow at different times and it is very normal so don’t worry unless a medical professional tells you to worry.

goose1964 · 03/09/2019 20:04

DS1 was always in the high 90s, and he's now 6foot 5. My dad is 6 foot 2 and there is a famous "giant" in my husband's family so the height is there. His brother is 6 foot 2,so a bit more of a normal height.

Neither of them are autistic so pp may well be worrying you unnecessarily.

Tippety · 03/09/2019 20:04

I wouldn't have thought being tall was caused by excess weight though OP, I'm sure it's nothing to worry about! I remember I had to be measured throughout school as I was 'too tall for a girl'- I'm only 5'11 now! They spoke to my mum about an op to adjust my height for cosmetic reasons which is just so bizarre. Anyhow I digress, ask the HV if you are worried but sounds like he is in proportion?

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 03/09/2019 20:13

My ds is very small. Tiny baby and so smallest in his class ( year 1). I used to fret over the ' centiles' but my mum pointed out someone will always be on the smaller end and someone needs to be on the bigger end or it wont work! And that is true

Crystal1975 · 03/09/2019 20:33

My DD has always been on the 99th centile - she was 5ft 10 at 12 years old but she’s still that height now at 18
Her dad is 6ft 2 but I’m only just 5ft!
Some kids are just tall 🤷‍♀️

Skyejuly · 03/09/2019 20:35

My husband is 6ft 5 and was investigated for Marfan syndrome but that wasnt just his height. He had other issues too which made then look into it x

drsausage · 03/09/2019 20:41

My DD1 has always been 99th centile for height and is now 6'1.

I wouldn't really refer to her as 'over tall'. Perhaps 'absolutely fucking gorgeous'. :-)

steff13 · 03/09/2019 20:46

#2 son was almost 10lbs at birth; he's always been a bigger kid. He's now 17 and 6'3", the tallest in our family. Some people are just bigger than others.

RandomMess · 03/09/2019 21:09

My DD2 was really tall like 98th Centile until she was 10/11. Takes after DH they are all tall and stop growing young.

People always mistook her for being much older than she was especially as I am so short!

violetswordfish · 03/09/2019 21:14

My DS is 5 months and has always been way off the charts tall. He's 99th centile for weight but so tall that he's not really that chubby. He's currently the average length of an 11 month old. I'm dreading the comments when he's a bit older and when people expect him to be walking/talking etc based on his size.

newtb · 03/09/2019 21:39

DD was on the 50th centile until she started on solids on the order of the HV when she started demanding a feed at 5am having slept through from 6 weeks. Within a very short space of time she hit the 98th for length and the 95th for weight.

They weren't that bothered as long as her length was ahead of her weight if that makes sense. She didn't until nearly 11 weeks after her first birthday, so was a bit chubby. Once she started walking she was off like a rocket and too tall to bang her under things like the dining table - it was at about eye level. At the time 1998, Asda vests were the only ones long enough to fasten, and because of her seat depth, she always had to go up a nappy size a good kg before the limit - a nappy used to be like a very shallow bikini brief on her instead of being high waisted.
