to give up teaching with 3dc and a mortgage

First day back after a wonderful Summer with my 3 little dc.
Childcare, commute, packed lunches, drop offs... to arrive to endless meetings, changing goalposts, feeling completely undervalued.
Missing my kids, coming home tired and stressed, dreading tomorrow.
But I have to provide for the kids. Our mortgage and bills come to about £1100pm.
He earns £28k pa.
I guess I need to work but I hate it.
Any ideas? My skills are language based.

What languages do you speak? There are a lot of transferable skills from teaching, but it's important to really point them out in an application. What sort of thing would you like to do? Is there a minimum salary that you would be content with?

Have you looked at local colleges or universities? X

Could you put in a part time request? I know a few people who did that.

Dh and I are both teachers. He is desperately unhappy. I've told him to quit and do supply until he finds something meaningful.could you do the same?

Poetryinaction · 02/09/2019 20:34

Thanks for the reply. I suppose the difficulty is that I'd like to be part time if possible. I think bringing home about £1k per month is what I need. So no less than £25k full time, but ideally I'd not want to work full time.

Supply is a good shout as there would be no meetings, marking, planning. And time off for interviews in other sectors. I am part time now but 4 days which is too much for me with the pressures of teaching.

Could you try swapping schools or sectors? As pp said college? Or private sector? If you can speak languages there will be other options for you.

I quit 3 years ago as it just about broke me - still get the teaching nightmares at this time of year until I remember I don't have to go back any more...I've done a bit of supply here and there but mostly private tuition. Don't earn as much as I used to but we made some lifestyle changes and made it work.

Thanks for the replies. My languages are French and Spanish but I would love to work with English somehow - writing or editorial work.

Supply is incredibly difficult to manage when you need childcare though. You can end up paying for them to be in childcare when you aren't getting work, or you get offers of work and can't take them as no childcare.

Part time makes sense though.
Change to 0.6 of a week. Because of the personal allowance and the way tax works, your money (take home) doesn't drop to 0.6.

I have no choice about my timetable. I am 0.64 but across 7 days a fortnight. I can't do less but I'd love to.
