Would the police stop someone for this?

Man cycling towards me this morning. 13-14 month old child on his front, facing out, in a very loosely done-up ergo type buckle carrier. He has a large rucksack on his back, stuffed full and coming above his shoulders.
It’s a racer type bike and he’s leaning forward about 45 degrees, kid is almost horizontal and waving its arms about.

Please tell me the police would stop you for doing this, or WIBU for not trying to stop him myself?

kid is almost horizontal and waving its arms about.

With terror or glee?

Omg that sounds so dangerous!! What goes through some people’s heads? Confused I’m assuming the baby didn’t have a helmet on either? Madness. I’d hope they’d be stopped too but obviously that would only happen by coincidence of cycling past a police car wouldn’t it? Not sure!

AmIThough · 02/09/2019 09:30

Police would stop the cyclist if they deemed the child to be at risk, if they saw it of course.

Definitely not worth trying to stop them yourself.

violetswordfish · 02/09/2019 09:31

That's dangerous! I'd hope the police would stop them just because the baby doesn't have any sort of protection.

I see people with babies in carriers not done up properly all the time but the worst that can happen is they slump a bit, or their hips aren't properly supported. On a bike that's a whole different thing! There's even warnings in the ergo packaging not to do anything like cycling, skiing etc with a baby strapped to you.

Hedgehogblues · 02/09/2019 09:35

This is really disturbing I won't even carry my baby in my manual wheelchair because of the angle I have to have my torso to get myself up hills

with terror or glee?
@Lifecraft does it matter?!

Neither man nor child wearing a helmet, I must admit that the lack of headgear was the least of my concerns. Bike helmets are not legally compulsory anyway so I’d be surprised if police could stop for that alone (eg if kid was in a proper bike seat but no helmet?)

What Police? They don't come to break ins around here.

Handily, there is a police station at the top of my road, that was directly on the route that Fuckwit Cyclist was going. There are always coppers having a morning bacon roll in the cafe opposite.

They might stop the person to give advice.

But since it’s legal to have babies in a trailer connected to a bike I’d doubt they could charge them with anything unless it caused an injury.

I see cyclists near me on busy main roads with those baby trailers on their bikes and I just think all it would take is someone to not break in time behind or someone to go through a red light and that baby would be hit.

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 02/09/2019 10:17

I’m not fussed about him being charged, no. Just about someone pointing out what a fuckwit he is.

Big difference between those trailers and what this guy was doing though. I am not suggesting that all ways of carrying small children on/behind bikes are dangerous. Just this particular scenario.

This sounds really dangerous. Yes the police would stop him and advise him, probably.

But, I am sorry the description really made me laugh. Can see why you got the 'in terror or glee's response.

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 02/09/2019 10:36

The child was waving its arms in happiness and probably for that reason, likethisone, the look on the man’s face suggested that he also thought it was a huge laugh.

Babies are famous for knowing exactly what is good for them though, so that’s alright then.
