Rollercoaster Rage

Ok, not big rage but annoying. We have recently come back from Orlando which was a bit of a once in a lifetime trip, following a truly awful year.
The amount of pics from rides we went on that have been wrecked by someone in front flinging their arms as wide and high as they can!
Within our package we got 'free' photos from theme park rides. We loved this as we can't take them ourselves on rides. DC are 12 and 10 and got increasingly more daring as the holiday went on.
Some of the pics you can't even see them because the adult in front has flung their arms up as they passed the camera! DD12 was really chuffed with herself going on a very scary ride - none of us would ever do it again but glad we did it once - but the pic was wrecked. Guy in front - one hand blocked my face and one hand blocked DD's. Nonetheless she insisted on buying the souvenir photo frame (fortunately I've photo shopped him out and us in). Guy in front paused and admired the pic at the screens and didn't even get a copy!
Next ride a woman flung her arms up and completely blocked me on the pic. At the screens she looked at me and said "Oh I blocked you". Yes thanks.
I don't do this. I try and smile if I can. But I don't wreck the pic for the children or adult behind me. Is it just me this happens to??? A large portion of our pics have been affected this way.
Small problems I know, I'll get over it Smile

I've also just come back from Orlando. After a lifetime of gripping the handles and squeezing my eyes shut I put my arms up on one ride and I was chuffed to bits with myself Grin ( I was at the back of the carriage though!)

The photos are incidental to the ride imo. 99.9% of them are awful anyway- who knew people could pull such weird faces? You don't go on the ride for the photo, you go on for the thrill and the fun. If it happens to be a good(ish) picture, that's a bonus.

Incidentally- we didn't pay for any of the photos either. Our package included a Memory Maker thing, which sent the pictures to the app. I screenshotted them and will print from my phone if I choose to later.

uokhun25 · 02/09/2019 09:03

lolz - you need to get over it - they were just having fun - no one meant to ruin the photo - if the photos were so important go again and get the front row!

TBH - its just a photo, you have the actual memory forever and the photo would be forgotten about in a few months anyway!

Baguetteaboutit · 02/09/2019 09:05

If a tree falls in a forest and it doesn't take a selfie, did it even happen?

Nottheduchess · 02/09/2019 09:09

Why on earth would they not? Seriously get a grip, they are out to enjoy themselves too. Was it in Universal or Disneyland? In Disneyland you don’t have to buy them, just tap your pass under the photo and you can view them online.

EscapeTheCastle · 02/09/2019 09:12

I understand what you mean. We got lucky with 99% of the ride photos but there was one where we were blocked out by folk doing the arms in the air like they just don't care thing, and yes it's annoying.

The OP is probably talking about the Disney ticket that comes with memory maker - all your photos are free. It's rather good.

What was the busyness like end of August?

elvis86 · 02/09/2019 09:13

Of course YABU to expect rollercoaster photos to be great photos of your kids with nobody else in them.

Do you really think that people ought to get to the camera and (assuming they even notice) think "Ooh - I'd better pull my arms down and shrink into my seat so the person behind gets a good photo".. Grin

They're probably posing for their own photo - it's not like the ride pauses at the camera and you know when it's taking your photo and when it's taking the photo of the row behind.

You've invested way too much in having a collection of tacky photos IMO.

ReasonedCamper · 02/09/2019 09:18

The answer is to buy the pic of the people behind where you are blocking them Grin

It’s a thing. The theme parks encourage it. Maybe offer as feedback that the cameras could be better positioned to prevent this and they might sell more pics.

Branleuse · 02/09/2019 09:31

you saved money on pics youll never look at again anyway

Shodan · 02/09/2019 09:45

If a tree falls in a forest and it doesn't take a selfie, did it even happen?

Grin Grin Grin

PinkyPrincessy · 02/09/2019 09:56

I think you’re being utterly ridiculous. If you wanted perfect photos you should have queued for the front rows

8misskitty8 · 02/09/2019 10:00

Did you look at the photos after ‘your one’ ?

These cameras take multiple photos of the same carriage with the one behind in shot. We check and get all of them as even if we are blocked by the person in front from one photo the next carriage photo will show us clearer.
We tend to do group posing for the camera or Dh will attempt to cuddle whichever Dd he is beside which results in glaring or he pretends to have passed out.
I’m not a fan of the really fast ones so those photos are often me eyes shut and screaming.

funmummy48 · 02/09/2019 10:15

We've bought a few of these photos over the years. Trust me, they end up languishing in the bottoms of drawers and the backs of cupboards. What really counts is the memories. Don't let this one small thing spoil the memory of what sounds like a fab family holiday.

8misskitty8 · 02/09/2019 10:17

Did anyone else see the thread title and thought of the inbetweeners episode when they go to Thorpe park ?

Mia1415 · 02/09/2019 10:22

People are enjoying themselves. Half the fun of a rollercoaster is being brave enough to have your hands in the air.

The photo is an added extra NOT the purpose of the ride.

I mean this in the nicest possible way, but there is far more to an Orlando holiday than a few ride pictures.

Mia1415 · 02/09/2019 10:24

Also, just to add if the pictures are really important to you then ask the ride operator to seat you at the front of the train or at the front of a carriage. Problem solved.

MorganKitten · 02/09/2019 15:24

YABU everyone is entitled to enjoy the ride. If the photos were that important the you sit at the front, even if it means waiting longer.
Just enjoy the moment and allow other to do the same.

SuzieBishop · 02/09/2019 15:35

YABU. You’re on a rollercoaster, not a red carpet.

groovejet · 02/09/2019 15:48

YABU, we also returned from Florida last week and yes we had some photos were we were blocked out along with some photos were we blocked others and some were we blocked out each other There are so many photo opportunities in the Disney parks that a few bad ride photos don't mean much.

Funkyslippers, queues were not too bad the last 2 weeks (better than I was anticipating) especially early in the morning and at night the hour or so before the parks close, some of the popular /newer rides had long times but you can get fastpasses for those ahead of time. Universal queues were much quicker, we had express pass there but could have easily managed without it.

ElizaDee · 02/09/2019 16:54

If you want a good picture you have to keep letting people go in front of you until you get the front seats. That's what I've done in the past.

incognito1976 · 02/09/2019 17:01

YABU. The pictures are an optional extra and it's hardly a big deal. I'm pretty sure you have enough photos of your holiday not to need the crappy shots they take with an automatic sensor on a bloody rollercoaster. They're nearly always terrible photos and of course they'll have other people in them. Other people are entitled to put their arms up on a rollercoaster if they want to. The pictures aren't meant to be pretty, smiley family groups. They're meant to be of people screaming, pulling faces and waving their arms about ... you know, like people do on rollercoasters.

It seems absolutely incredible to me that you went on a brilliant, once in a lifetime holiday with your family and the one thing you've taken away from that experience was that someone's arm was in the way on an automated photo. Get a grip and then get several grips more.

StormTreader · 02/09/2019 17:04

If the pictures are important to you then queueing the extra bit to get a front seat is the way to go, otherwise you're risking being blocked.

Mummymummums · 02/09/2019 23:21

Ok IABU. I made it clear it wasn't a if rage, just minor, and interested in hearing views, thank you.
It most certainly didn't define the holiday as some decided they'd gleaned Hmm
The pics were free through the Memory Maker as some have said, though we bought packages at Universal and Busch Gardens. Hadn't thought of sitting at front but usually I'm scared enough!
For those that asked the queues are pretty bad in August we found for main rides. Things like Space Mountain or Rock & Roll Rollercoaster were often 2 hours. It'll be busier with Star Wars land just open. Fast passes help if you have them. Queues at Universal/Busch Gardens were less although Hagrid's motorbike at Universal is newest and was often 3 hours.
It's an epic holiday. I see IABU and will stop thinking of the kids behind me and fling my arms up with the best of them in future.

I should add that at Disney there's always stuff to watch to avoid queues or less popular rides with shorter queues

uokhun25 · 03/09/2019 06:47

I went to Orlando with my family 10 years ago and I don't have any photos on the rides - yet I remember it all clearly - i have really fond memories of being on splash mountain with my mum, dad and sister !! You will have the memories forever photos or not and you won't forget - trust me!! (We are all going again next year as adults a family holiday - my sister and I taking our partners and my step son - the great memories are all obviously still there in all our minds without the photos x)

tillytrotter1 · 03/09/2019 13:18

Been quite a few time, never had this happen! The cameras seem to be placed high enough to cover everyone, even with waving arms. Personally I could do without them all together, loathe photos.

can I ask if the queues were horrendous? I was thinking of going the last 2 weeks of August next year. Is that a good time to go? Thanks

Yes they will but it should be thinning out. Get your park tickets before you go, American Attractions are good, and you can Fast Pass 3 rides each day 30 days before you go, 60 if you're in a Resort hotel. Get a map and make sure you're not booking rides on opposite sides of the park consecutively. It will still be very hot though with some spectacular rain storms in the afternoon, they don't last long, like being in a warm shower.
