To think that people are waking up?

Something has changed in me. I can't stop thinking about how everything I do affects the environment. Is it just me or have others experienced a real shift in thinking and feeling? Yes there are loads of people who have already been especially conscious of these things, and I'm sure most of us do the obvious like recycling where possible, but this feels different. DH feels the same, like something has 'clicked'. Last week he said he's only going to eat red meat once a month due to environmental impact - very out of character. I keep thinking of Greta T travelling for days/weeks by boat when a flight would have got her there in hours. Are others feeling the same? Do you think something might be happening nationally to people's mindsets? Is there now more hope than ever that we might just not f**k up the world?

This sounds like the woo tosh my DM spouts about.

Hmm
Orangecake123 · 01/09/2019 14:40

I agree. I've started doing small things that I wouldn't even have thought about before. It's mainly because of being around somebody else who is very active in XR.

TiredOldTable · 01/09/2019 14:41

You must be very young not to remember all the previous waves of environmentalism

NoBaggyPants · 01/09/2019 14:41

I get where you're coming from OP.

Anyone that suggests awareness of environmental issues is "woo tosh" is ignorant.

BishopofBathandWells · 01/09/2019 14:42

I agree. I hope more people feel the same. Life feels very precarious right now.

Theendofmyrope · 01/09/2019 14:43

This sounds like the woo tosh my DM spouts about

My word Hmm

easyandy101 · 01/09/2019 14:44

It's a fad for most people, just like every time it comes around

Shockers · 01/09/2019 14:45

Fucking hell- ‘woo tosh’ - really?

I despair.

Silenceissilver · 01/09/2019 14:46

I disagree.
My DC who are sixth form & uni age say that nobody their age that they know really gives a fig about the environment

kenandbarbie · 01/09/2019 14:53

I don't know. I think a lot of young people just pay lip service to it. They are still going to drive and fly on a plane, not to mention buy a load of stuff. Also, I feel like the individual actions of people in their day to day lives are futile in comparison to the environmental harm from industry and particularly in countries like India and China.

BogglesGoggles · 01/09/2019 14:56

The trend has just filtered down to the masses. Environmentalism was highly fashionable a few years ago. The very fashionable individuals have moved on of course but now the trend has become popular. It’s like the whole gluten free thing.

CountFosco · 01/09/2019 15:00

I'm sadly not convinced. When my lovely MIL came to stay with us she was proudly carrying a bamboo cup she'd just bought. Kept telling us she was saving the environment as she refused to use our ceramic mugs (which we've had for decades). In the next breath she'd tell us about the 3 foreign trips (2 long haul) she has planned for the next few months. When I said the biggest impact she could have on the environment was not flying she said she wasn't going to stop flying (her family are all over the globe so I understand how she feels the way she does). I had a very similar discussion with BIL when he also turned up with a bamboo mug.

Clearly the manufacturers of bamboo mugs are doing well out of the current environmental awareness but I don't think most of us really want to give up on things that are important to us and don't have the knowledge to understand a bamboo mug will not make a bit of difference. My Mum told me she was thinking of throwing out her decades old tupperware, she didn't realise continuing to use it was the best thing to do.

TBH I think the big thing is to apply pressure on governments and businesses to change, making them encourage the innovation and put in place the infastructure that will really make the difference at a worldwide scale.

1980Gal · 01/09/2019 15:01

At risk of contributing more 'woo tosh', I think the difference for me has been that I am now experiencing it emotionally rather than because the arguments are strong and it is something I 'should' be thinking about.

I dont really know anyone that does much 'for the environment' sorry. It woukd be nice bit most people feel other people should do stuff or do one thing the want to do because it fits in.

BumbleBeee69 · 01/09/2019 15:05

Sorry OP but NOPE.

KUGA · 01/09/2019 15:08

Were being brainwashed.
And governments treat us as if we are stupid

1980Gal · 01/09/2019 15:08

I agree that businesses and governments need to instigate changes in order for things that really have a significant impact to occur, but isn't this all heading in the 'right' direction? The pressure must come from the masses, and if the masses are now changing how they think and feel about this stuff (even if misinformed, the fact that people are conscious of things is positive) then that surely is a good thing.

I know exactly what you mean. January I suddenly felt like not drinking tea, coffee, alcohol and red meat. I haven't touched any of those things since. I used to be a heavy tea & filter coffee dinner! Loved sausage and bacon at the weekends. We now eat 5 veggie dinners a week! Have not wanted any if those things at all! I have become more spiritual (meditation and reiki) though so wonder if it's all linked to tuning into the earth"s frequency. Expect some negative comments from people on here. I understand where you are coming from, and agree with you.

edwinbear · 01/09/2019 15:12

Hasn’t the chief medical officer just warned antibiotic resistance will wipe us out before climate change does?

timshelthechoice · 01/09/2019 15:13

Nope.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 01/09/2019 15:14

Scientifically proven "woo tosh" then.

LazyFace · 01/09/2019 15:20

I fucking wish... I started a new job this week, there's not a recycling bin in sight as 'nobody bothers', there were none on our holiday either.
Things that were wrapped in glass/paper bags years ago are in plastics in supermarkets.
Balloons, glitter and bloody Xmas stashing in yhe middle of summer.
No, the majority of humanity will only panic when it'll be too late and all my and my family's efforts at beeswax wraps, less plastics, less consumption etc make fuck all difference.

MIdgebabe · 01/09/2019 15:23

MORE and more people are taking small and medium steps. It cheers me up when people start conversations, which a year ago no one did

Like DD who used to roll her eyes at me, took me to a new shop for solid conditioner yesterday, and she has stopped drinking milk. Today, my friends were talking about driving..they apologised for going slow (60mph) . I told them I also drive at that speed because of the impact on fuel efficiency

Dogsarebetterthancatsok · 01/09/2019 15:26

I haven’t changed a thing. If you saw the amount of waste we do on a daily basis at work that can’t be recycled you’d have a heart attack. It’s big businesses that need to do more.

lavenderandthyme · 01/09/2019 15:30

I do feel much more conscious yes. However, I don't think the younger generation care at all. This is the problem. Also, although people may buy electric cars, not use straws and think about their consumption of meat, they won't on the whole stop flying off on holiday.
