To find this phrasing odd?

My niece and nephew have just been to visit from abroad. I printed a few photos to send them and asked DH to write out a card (they’re from his side of the family and I don’t write in their native language well).

DH wrote, “we had a good time, etc...My wife printed these photos for you.” AIBU to think that’s odd? They obviously know me as Emma (and don’t know any other Emma’s, they’re not in the UK!) so I don’t know why he wouldn’t refer to me by name? Or even Aunty Emma, etc.?

AIBU to think that’s odd? Perhaps it rankles a bit as I haven’t much of a relationship with them (language barrier) so it sounds to me like I’m his secretary or something!

I think you are over thinking!

AtrociousCircumstance · 01/09/2019 13:05

No that is a bit distancing. It impersonalises you. Whereas you’d done this nice thing to connect with them. His wife indeed! You’re a person in your own right.

My DH would do this and has done this. He does it without thinking & it always makes us laugh when it’s pointed out to him. He does it without realising. I wouldn’t worry about it at all.

Yes, weird. It's a very formal way to speak to his own family and one which distances and dehumanises/depersonalises you as well.

I could not in a million years bring myself to be bothered by something like this, especially when it was written in a language that isn’t my own and of which I don’t necessarily fully understand the tiny nuances. You’re over thinking it. Let it go.

I introduced my husband as 'some bloke who likes to follow me around.' Blush Blush

Honestly his name just completely flew out of my head.

ElizaPancakes · 01/09/2019 13:31

It feels a bit impersonal. My husband would write this though as he’s fucking shit at writing cards Grin

yesanotheremma · 01/09/2019 13:37

Yes I reckon I should be happy he wrote the card anyway! He certainly does refer to me by name when speaking (though when I commented on the card he said “I always refer to you as my wife”) so it did strike me as odd!
