To recommend an eco search engine to you

I’ve switched to this search engine that uses 80% of profits for green projects. They say it takes 45 searches to fund planting a tree, and have planted 60+ million trees so far

www.ecosia.org/

I’m finding it fine to use so far, just slight annoyance of setting up favourites again!

Eldest ds introduced this to us, it's great!

Sounds like a good thing to switch to, but how does it work though? How do searches = profits? (Sorry if the answer is really obvious!)

Justanotherlurker · 01/09/2019 10:42

Considering they use Bing for their algorithms and not Google means the 2 million trees they have planted since 2009 doesn't even offset the 2 million trees they have planted since 2009

This is a case of sticking Eco in the name and people thinking they are saving the planet from internet searches. It's not even a "every little bit helps" either.

Snowy111 · 01/09/2019 10:47

I don’t know the answer to that, must be something to do with advertising ...

So I did another search on Ecosia and found this Grin

One search closer to planting another tree Halo

It's excellent and I've been using it for a few years now. I had to delete google from my phone as otherwise I was defaulting to that out of habit.

Our local council has it set as their desktop search engine too and I believe schools are/should do the same

Snowy111 · 01/09/2019 10:58

Ooh good idea, I might suggest it at work

I have done a few searches (in google!) to see if they really are for real and doing what they say they are ie are they really funding the projects and planting the trees and the consensus of opinion is yes, so I do think it makes a difference.

I've been using it for a couple of weeks, after I heard of it via an article in the paper. The search itself is fine (and I like that you get a counter to show how many searches you've made, and can work out the approximate number of trees planted), but I find the 3 ads you get at the top of the results page rather random. With all the stuff about Google not paying taxes, it's also nice to find an easy to use search engine that isn't Google. I've got Ecosia as an app on my home screen and are using that as my first choice now.

I agree it seems to work absolutely fine and I’d rather the money made goes towards planting trees rather than lining Google’s tax avoiding pocketsGrin
