To think that MNHQ is long overdue in providing an 'edit' function for posts?

Full disclosure: my disproportionate concern about this matter is almost certainly tied into my lack of self esteem and blind panic about embarrassing myself in a public fashion Grin

However, having said that, MN is literally the only forum that I have ever been a member of that doesn't allow for editing typos, poor grammar etc. after hitting the Post button. Whilst this can sometimes be the source of hilarious 'boil-in-the-vag curry' type humour, the constant vigilance that I have to exercise before posting, knowing that I get no do-over in the event of an egregious error, causes me to have a constant slight eye twitch. Anyone else feel the same, or knows if there is some arcane reason why the edit function has been disabled? My first-world problemometer is going crazy over here.

frantically checks OP for mistakes before starting thread

OP posts:
nitgel · 01/09/2019 08:07

It is pain been asking for years....

PersonaNonGarter · 01/09/2019 08:09

No, it makes no sense of the rest of the thread. Just edit your post before hand or live with the shame of the grocer’s apostrophe. Grin

nitgel · 01/09/2019 13:25

well that was a short tread Grin

duffyluth · 01/09/2019 13:27

I used to think we needed it, but actually not being able to change posts is a good thing. It's good to be able to say to a poster, well actually you said X when they start to argue their viewpoint is Y.

Passthecherrycoke · 01/09/2019 13:27

Yep I agree. MN as a forum is very basic and old fashioned though. I’ve not known a decent forum not to have an edit function for 15 years

CodenameVillanelle · 01/09/2019 13:29

Mumsnet works because it's no frills. It's the best talk forum because it doesn't allow editing, quoting etc.

Celebelly · 01/09/2019 13:29

Other forums I use have time-limited edit functions, so you can only edit for, say, five minutes after posting. That avoids anyone changing their posts halfway though a discussion, but allows for correction of typos or adding clarifying information.

alibongo5 · 01/09/2019 13:31

I'm more of a reader than a poster and find a few things surprisingly clunky about the site considering it's such a high profile/popular site. As well as the lack of editing, there is also the fact that most other forums I visit remember where you got up to in a thread (as long as you're signed in) so will go straight to the first unread post without having to "bookmark" each one you may want to revisit. That's the biggest irritation for me.

RezCowgirl · 01/09/2019 13:31

Proof reading is a lost art since autocorrect.

GinDaddy · 01/09/2019 13:31

Editing would be the worst. It would be impossible to follow a thread for the most part, because of people going back and doing revisionist things.

AuntieStella · 01/09/2019 13:31

No.

People need to stand by what they have written.

They can use the 'preview' function if they want to check the final form for SPAG

iklboo · 01/09/2019 13:32

There's no preview on the app unfortunately. Still don't want an edit button though.

TheAlternativeTentacle · 01/09/2019 13:33

i thunk we nood it.

Thare is nothung as anniying tham minur errurs im a poat.

TheFatberg · 01/09/2019 13:39

It would be abused. People would delete things they've said as soon as they get any grief for them. Just proofread. We can wait 10 more seconds for your insights.

BlankTimes · 01/09/2019 13:41

There's no preview on the app unfortunately

Can you re-read what you've just written, review and alter it if needs be?

duffyluth · 01/09/2019 13:48

I can preview in the app. I don't have a button to do it though, I just look at what I have written before pressing post. It's really simple.

timshelthechoice · 01/09/2019 13:51

Nope! Stand by what you write and think before you post. Fucking hate it when you enter a thread and the OP's edited because the poster didn't like the responses.

iklboo · 01/09/2019 13:54

@BlankTimes oh yes. I definitely try and do that before I post.

dollydaydream114 · 01/09/2019 13:55

OP: “AIBU to think that it’s not fair for my DH to make me do all the housework even though I have a full time job because he says it’s women’s work?”
50 other people: “YANBU! He’s a monster. Get rid of him.”
OP: Edits her post so it says “AIBU to stab my DH through the heart with a screwdriver because he won’t beat our toddler with a belt for being friends with a black child at nursery?”

Do you see the problem there? Hmm

Passthecherrycoke · 01/09/2019 13:56

I don’t understand why people are convinced it’s a problem. What do you think other forums do?

You quote the original post (oh wait- Mn is too outdated to have a quote function either 😭) or someone tells the thread its been edited. And, it’s not even a big deal. It’s only a forum

Passthecherrycoke · 01/09/2019 13:57

Oh and edited is obviously just designed so you can go back and correct typos/ misspellings or add in pertinent information

duffyluth · 01/09/2019 14:12

Because on other forums people can and do change or delete what they said which in a decent debate/discussion is problematic.

Passthecherrycoke · 01/09/2019 14:14

Of course they do but it’s no big deal is it? Its not a huge conspiracy, the benefits still outweigh the cons imo

duffyluth · 01/09/2019 14:16

No, it's not a big deal. I don't think it's a big deal either way, I just have a preference for no edit. I like that about Mumsnet.

U2HasTheEdge · 01/09/2019 14:18

YANBU.

It would be more useful than that stupid vote button which is so ugly.

As long as it's a time edit function it will cause no problems at all.
