Mortifying upset stomach at friends for weekend, how long will I be sick - dodgy oyster

I could cry with embarrassment I don't know these people well, they are my wife's friends.

My stomach is suddenly awful and the only reason I can think why is the oysters ffs. How long will this likely last? We're supposed to be travelling tomorrow. Will i hopefully recover rapidly after my body fucking ousts all the toxin?

Jesus Christ I feel so gross and fucking mortified.

Fucking google is mentioning scary stuff about sepsis from oysters.

24 hours I think. Hope you feel better soon!

If it's food poisoning you'll be over the worst after 24 hours. Keep drinking fluids and try to get some electrolytes if possible (or make some yourself*

If you're worried about the travel, take some imodium. But don't take it if you're at home as your body is trying to flush out whatever is inside you and imodium just kind of keeps it there, so its only for when you really can't go like long car journeys etc.

*Six (6) level teaspoons of sugar. Half (1/2) level teaspoon of salt. One Litre of clean drinking or boiled water and then cooled - 5 cupfuls (each cup about 200 ml.)

The last seafood poisoning I had, I was able to leave the bathroom after 6 hours, but I was wiped out (very shaky and wobbly) for the next 12 hours and only fit for sleep. After that I was a lot better.

Hope it clears up soon for you.

Genuine advice- do not, I repeat, DO NOT trust a fart

GinasGirl · 01/09/2019 03:02

This happened to me once when staying with friends, with the added bonus of needing to get the eurotunnel home the next day .. I sympathise!
I was so embarrassed, but when you're ill, you're ill. You just need to go with it. Drink plenty of fluids and get some rest.
We sent a HUGE bunch of flowers after we left, and of course made sure everything was clean.
Good luck and get well soon!

Oh gosh I feel for you OP. I can't tell you how long it'll last but I'm sure it'll pass. Whatever you do if you're feeling awful then don't try to hide it.

I actually took a trip to a housewarming a couple of weeks ago and an hour before getting there decided to start a new medication that had nausea/vomiting and other not so great things as side effects. Of course I had to get them. I got there then spent an hour in the bathroom of their lovely new house feeling like death and was mortified.

I wouldn't worry too much about what Google says. You can get sepsis as a rare side effect from any infection. It is more than likely going to pass fairly quickly.

Fingers crossed that you feel better soon.

I second the advice that the ‘glued to the loo’ phase is usually done by 24 hours. But the shaky exhaustion phase can last 2-3 days more.

Sorry you’re going through this...

MaxiPaddy · 01/09/2019 03:21

If it makes you feel any better I've been sick with terrible diarrhea and vomiting all week. For reference to this story I, A) sleep naked, and B) have been going through my room with stuff to give to charity, so there's a big bag of clothing next to my bed.

So that being said, yesterday I was lying in bed, wrongly trusted a fart, tried to roll out of bed without my bare ass touching the sheets, fell out of bed, onto the garbage bag, where I proceeded to shit myself. I then had to do the walk of shame to the bathroom, naked, leaving a little shit trail behind me.

So, it could be worse. Wine

QOD · 01/09/2019 03:31

Shame you weren’t taking your own advice and wearing a @MaxiPaddy 😂

MaxiPaddy · 01/09/2019 03:41

Indeed.

We've all been there, please don't be embarrassed! I vividly remember having norovirus at my friend's house, they only had one bathroom and I'd only met her husband once! I projectile vomited on their wall and spent most of the night in the bathroom. They were very kind and told me stories of their travels in India when they both got dysentery and my friend's husband had an 'accident' on a bus!

I've also had the odd house guest who has come down with an IBS attack or got drunk and had D&V all night. It's just part of being human. I don't think any less of them. Some people are embarrassed but others very open about bodily functions and I wouldn't have realised they were ill unless they'd told me! I also had a houseguest who woke us up asking how to open the child lock on my Medicine cabinet because she had period pain and needed painkillers!!

If it was an oyster it could be norovirus, a large percentage of raw oysters carry the virus. So you should feel better in 24 hours.

Send your partner/host to the pharmacy for some Imodium or Paramol (contains dihydracodeine that helps stop cramps and diarrohea). Certain antihistamines from the pharmacy can help with nausea eg cetirizine and Phenargen (promethazine).

Hope you feel better soon!

Happyandglorious · 01/09/2019 07:15

Bravo and feel better @MaxiPaddy and OP

AbsentmindedWoman · 01/09/2019 16:37

Thanks all for the support!

Things seem ok today so far (in the US so not long after breakfast) and once I got to sleep, I didn't wake up to have more incidents.

Keeping my fingers crossed whatever it is has mostly gone through me and things will be ok. We're supposed to be going sailing this afternoon, I'm slightly uneasy, but think I feel close enough to normal to go...Does this sound risky? Could it swing back round for another attack?

I wouldn’t risk it. Better to have a rest day. Hope you feel better soon.
