To be freaking out about bedbugs in premier Inn....

I'm staying in a premier Inn - tonight is the second night. Bedbugs would be one of my worst fears and whenever we go away I always check the beds and area around them just in case. Anyway, saw a little louse/beetle type thing on duvet earlier - DH chucked it out the door before I could get a proper look. It did look quite small, only a few mm and was running pretty fast. Anyway, freaking out about it being a bedbug now..... If this hotel had them there would have been reviews complaining, right?! Or do I need to burn all the suitcases and belongings, just in case.....

Where are you? I'm in Lincolnshire and we are inundated with little black crunchy beetle things at the moment due to harvest.

IHaveBrilloHair · 31/08/2019 22:15

I've stayed in plenty of Premier Inns and all have been spotless.
That doesn't mean yours is but I do think you are perhaps being paranoid.

FeatherySquawkington · 31/08/2019 22:16

It's Lincolnshire but the windows don't open so I'm confused as to how it's got its way into the room and on the duvet.....

Or should I say under the duvet.....

If it's really bothering you then go to reception and ask for a different roo

Agree with previous poster that everyone I have stayed in has been spotless

thenightsky · 31/08/2019 22:19

OP... they get everywhere! I pull back my bedcovers and find at least 5. They are attracted to white and light colours. They can jump a few inches and are good at dodging my hoover nozzle. They are normal in Lincolnshire right now.

I'll see if I can take a pic of one to put your mind at rest.

pallisers · 31/08/2019 22:19

But unlikely that was a bed bug but just in case ....

When you get home, put all your clothes into sealed bin bags and then into a tumble drier at high heat for at least 30 minutes.

Take off what you are wearing and put in sealed bin bags before washing and drying at high heat for 30 minutes.

The dryer will kill them. I think an intensely hot wash will do the same but the dryer definitely does.

It is unlikely but you really don't want to get bed bugs (I speak from bitter bitter experience)

Jinxed2 · 31/08/2019 22:21

Any Premier inn I’ve ever stayed at was very clean.

ImTheCaddy · 31/08/2019 22:22

I'm a bit of an expert on bed bugs...

They are pretty small, around a mm and round and sort of black see-through.

The main sign of them are their poo which is tiny black dots on edges of mattresses etc

FeatherySquawkington · 31/08/2019 22:23

the night sky that would help, thank you. There are no reviews complaining about bedbugs in this premier Inn so I'm cautiously hopeful.....

What? Bed bugs?

imip · 31/08/2019 22:26

I’ve stayed in lots of premier inns and they have been fine. I have 2 autistic dc and they benefit from the same hotel when we have a break, really happy that they are always clean and tidy and no bedbugs.

No room service, dc don’t know that exists!

FeatherySquawkington · 31/08/2019 22:26

It was very small, longish body, brown see-through. Looked a little like a book louse but can't be sure as DH chucked it in the hall before I could start flipping my lid. Now I'm worried it's either wandered back in or into someone else's room!

Bugger... DH has been hoovering them up! I'll go have look in the tumbler drier filter... its usually full of them.

If I cant find one, then I'd describe them as just big enough to squish under a fingernail, with a crunchy shell. Look jet black and the shape of a tiny, tiny ladybird. They are called thunderflies here.

thenightsky · 31/08/2019 22:28

What? Bed bugs? Nooooo... Lincolnshire thunderflies at harvest time!

FeatherySquawkington · 31/08/2019 22:29

Not a thunderfly and didn't look crunchy.

Would it be crazy to ask reception whether they have ever had them/complaints about them?

BovrilonToast · 31/08/2019 22:32

This is a bedbug. I had the misfortune of staying in an infested hotel last year.

Rantysaurus · 31/08/2019 22:33

Bed bugs and thunderflies are completely different things! Get your torch and check the bed as you usually do, OP. Its unlikely it was one if you can't see evidence of anymore.

pallisers · 31/08/2019 22:36

yes but the younger ones are greyer/more translucent I think.

pallisers · 31/08/2019 22:37

Any Premier inn I’ve ever stayed at was very clean.

I don't think it has much to do with clean though. If they get in on another guest and burrow into the mattress or behind the headboard etc.. Although I suppose if there is a good mattress cover that might make it more unlikely.

They are a huge problem in NYC and a growing problem generally where I live.

SqueakyChicken · 31/08/2019 22:39

Bedbugs are flat and resemble a translucent apple pip if they haven’t had a blood meal.

Check the mattress for black spots and especially in the seams. If nothing is obvious you’re fine!

FeatherySquawkington · 31/08/2019 22:40

But I don't suppose I would find one baby on it's own?

OP posts:
FeatherySquawkington · 31/08/2019 22:42

It wasn't in the seams, it was just under the duvet when we untucked it.
