not to blanch runner beans before freezing?

My life has come to this. So rock and roll. But I am essentially a lazy gardener and cook and can't be faffed with this blanching business. I've found a couple of sites which say yep go ahead and just cut the beans and freeze. But my usual oracle, BBC Food, says I must blanch.

Views please.

And be gentle. My beans are actually delish - picked way before they get stringy. They are sweet and yummy!

Is this an ironic thread in response to the one about suspending AIBU Grin

TheoneandObi · 31/08/2019 18:33

No this is beyond irony. And desperate. I have a huge glut that needs dealing with NOW

Sorry, but I think you should blanch them. The beans' texture, colour and flavour break down quicker in the freezer if you don't blanch them.

Putting them straight into the freezer after washing, topping and tailing is fine if you're going to eat them in the next six weeks, but if you hope to have your green beans in December you should blanch them.

Yes blanch away. Tiz the work of moments.

DorisDances · 31/08/2019 18:54

Definitely blanch. They sound yunmy!

livingthegoodlife · 31/08/2019 19:11

I blanche them here. It only takes minutes.

Phoenixrise · 31/08/2019 19:17

Definitely blanch, if frozen without blanching they end up tasting slightly odd when cooked, blanching keeps them tasting like fresh runner beans

Powerplant · 31/08/2019 19:19

I always used to blanch them but my lovely neighbour gave me some the other day and says she just freezes them and they’re fine

Reallybadidea · 31/08/2019 19:19

My mum never blanched; I grew up thinking that runner beans were grey.

TheoneandObi · 31/08/2019 19:23

Oh. We have a consensus. And lazy tho I am, I don’t want to inflict the risk of grey beans on the family
Thanks all!

I am really grateful to everyone who has posted here. I never understood why blanching was required. We sometimes have a glut of garden produce to freeze), I like to know why I am blanching things and now I do know.

Freeze without blanching what you can reasonably expect to eat in the next month (they'll be fine for a little longer).
If you have more than you will eat in a month then blanch them.

Make sure you mark the unblanched ones to eat first
