Or is that a terrible idea?

I know a family did this. 3 generations. The middle gen mostly grew up in many countries so thought it would be a blast to voluntarily inflict jetlagged toddlers on themselves for a 10 day journey. Group was 5 adults + walking 10m old & almost 3yr old.

They didn't realise that Japan is quite warm compared to Britain, lol. Their LOs were 10x noisier than 100 same age Japanese children. The jetlag was grim. They came back happy, though. I guess it is possible.

Re jet lag we found DS was actually fine going to Japan, probably more so than us. Way back was a bit harder but back to normal timetable within a few days. Same experience again this year when we did another long haul trip when he was about 18mo. Agree with the advice about night flights - so so so much easier.

Absolutely you can! I’ve travelled extensively and lived in different parts of Asia with my young children (typing this from a nearby area!) and It’s lovely! It’s not like the UK where everyone is quite hostile towards children for minor things like making noise, playing, simply existing outside past a certain time! Children are welcome everywhere, all the time, and people are so friendly to them! My DC think they’re little celebrities. If they ever get upset or make noise people are nevertheless grumpy about it like in England - they’ll come over and chat with them and coo at them and make them laugh. You never have to worry about whether somewhere is child friendly as everywhere is! Go for it!

It's the best idea. You will have an amazing time

YANBU - took DD to Aus ad NZ (from UK) when she was 9 months - had a great time.

RealMermaid · 19/09/2019 20:57

It will be fine! My DH has a big Japanese family, his cousin from Japan came over to the UK last year with her 3 little kids (all under 5, youngest was 4 months) so if it works that way round it will work the other way :) Japan is very child friendly.

See if you can borrow a carrier ( back pack style) and you’ll find it easier if access is difficult for a buggy. We trekked in the Atlas Mountains and a very bustly Marrakech when my DD was 3. They can still sleep in them.

Only if you can survive the flight. Which for my children meant it was a no. I'm sure once you are there it'll be fine.
