To worry about my arms going dead when I’m asleep?

Allfednonedead · 29/08/2019 16:58

Every night, before I go to sleep and whenever I wake up, my arms are numb and get pins and needles when I move them.

I’m not lying on them - it’s actually worst if I lie on my back with arms by my sides. It’s been going on for years, but it’s been getting worse recently.

I have hashimoto’s disease (an autoimmune disease that destroys the thyroid gland), as well as various MH problems, so I go to the GP quite a lot already. I hate being such a frequent flyer!

But should I be worried about this? Dr Google suggests it’s a nerve issue rather than circulation. Is it worth a phone appt?

Make an appointment. The healthcare service is there for everyone to use whenever they need to use it. You are not abusing the system, you have genuine health issues. I'm sure it's nothing serious but it's always best to get it checked out. Good luck!

I have a thyroid condition as well and suffer exactly the same.... when I went for acupressure massage the nerves in my neck, back and shoulders were so tight as they kneaded them out the pains shot down my arms. Found if I go regularly it doesn’t happen as often.

ElizaPancakes · 29/08/2019 20:09

I get this too, although I only notice it when I’m so exhausted I’m not doing my normal tossing and turning.

AndddddHerewegoagain · 29/08/2019 20:10

I have this. For me its caused by carpal tunnel syndrome. I have to wear wrist splints at night.

MostlyAmbridgeandcoffee · 29/08/2019 20:12

I get this from time to time too

Boots20 · 29/08/2019 20:12

I used to get this every night, turned out my pillow was too high and it was coming from my neck, I got a smaller flatter pillow & the problem disappeared! I remember thinking all sorts of awful things it could be but a doctor asked me had I any neck pain & said to reduce number of pillows & it worked x

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 29/08/2019 20:21

I get this if I do not have enough pillows, also have hashimotos! Have had issues with frozen shoulders too, but since a lot of physio years back and really watching my posture I have been free of that for a good few years now.

I sleep on my side though, so my fat pillows have to keep my head level

Allfednonedead · 30/08/2019 08:49

Thank you for all the replies! It sounds like I should experiment with pillow-placement before going to the GP, so your responses were very helpful.

And I can stop worrying about neurodegenerative diseases for a bit too.

I had this when I was anaemic.

bathsoup · 30/08/2019 09:12

I'm very interested in this. I also wake multiple times at night with numbness or pins and needles in both my arms and feet. It's been happening for a couple of years. GP hasn't found any cause. I have changed my mattress and tried several different pillows but there is no improvement. This can't be normal surely.

MollyButton · 30/08/2019 09:15

I get this, especially if my thyroid levels get a bit low. Anaemia could be a factor too.

@bathsoup have you had your thyroid checked?

bathsoup · 30/08/2019 09:25

Hi Mollybutton

Yes I have. GP said all fine.

TSH 1.05
FT4 12.0

I am tired and cold all the time but I don't sleep well so that probably explains the tiredness.

Iron levels are ok too.

onalongsabbatical · 30/08/2019 09:43

Sounds like it could be carpal tunnel syndrome. I used to have it regularly. Almost never now. I take magnesium and potassium for something else but it could have improved through me taking these. Worth looking into?

I barely saw the GP for years and currently am being seen for about 4 different unrelated things that all turned up at once. That’s just how it is.

I’d go see them for advice.

I found my husband was lying on my arms and I either woke up with a numb arm or agony if he stuck his elbow into the crook of my elbow. I asked him to stop and it's never happened again.

Thyroid problems here too, pins and needles in arms when I sleep. Interesting. I find B12 helps. It works on nervous system. I'm actually B12 deficient and that seems to go hand in hand with thyroid problems. I take a daily supplement and get injections when I feel run down. My symptoms of B12 deficiency were feeling like something was crawling on me / under my skin but nothing was there.
