Am I making too much of a fuss

I recently completed a qualification and was offered a job in the place I did my work experience . I was told verbally by the head I had got the job at the end of term and am meant to be starting in September.
I was told a contract would be sent out and I would be contacted about times for the first day.
So far I've received nothing and I'm really worried . I've sent an email but had no reply, I have asked a member of staff what times they usually go in the first day incase I'm not contacted but I'm not sure what else to do.
My husband thinks I'm flapping over nothing ,as I've been told I've got the job, and to just go in the first day, but I don't know hours or pay etc and it's making me really uncomfortable.
Am I making a fuss over nothing ,is this normal procedure?

It's not quite normal.

In your shoes I would feel exactly the same. Although you have emailed you can still try calling them.

WaterSheep · 29/08/2019 14:15

I would also be concerned about the lack of information / contract. It sounds like you work in a school, are you going into your NQT year by any chance?

IsobelRae23 · 29/08/2019 14:17

That’s not right

Knittedfairies · 29/08/2019 14:18

I'd be concerned too. Do you have anything in writing that the job is yours?

IsobelRae23 · 29/08/2019 14:19

Anything in emails to say you have the job?

Brownie79 · 29/08/2019 14:23

Literally was told the last day the job was mine and to bring in my information the first day back .

Obviously it's not normal. They haven't made the contact they said they would. Why would he think that's usual?

Brownie79 · 29/08/2019 14:27

It goes through the Local authority who are known in my area not to be very quick, so It could be a delay their end rather than anything sinister.

I don't want to turn up the first day and find that I'm not needed . Similarly i don't want to not go as I was told to go in the first day when I got the job.
I know some of the staff well but don't want to look like in flapping, as it doesnt create a great impression.

It's very unusual to be recruited on the last day of term.

As for coming back in September with information, surely that means your DBS and other paperwork hasn't been completed. Also you haven't had a handover about the children, or had a chance to prepare your classroom. Assuming of course you have just finished your PGCE.

Hairsprayqueeen · 29/08/2019 14:28

This happened to me. They'd changed their mind and there was no job. Hope it isn't same for you, keep on at them.

cansu · 29/08/2019 14:31

Try emailing the bursar. They will probably be in during holidays.

Brownie79 · 29/08/2019 14:32

To be clear I'm not a teacher I do support work ,also I have a full DBS as i did a work placement as part of my course .
@hairsprayqueen did you go in the first day or did they tell you before there was no job beforehand??

OP posts:
WaterSheep · 29/08/2019 14:36

I'm not a teacher I do support work

Do you have anything in writing about the job? I'm just worried for you, as we all know how bad the budgets are at the minute.

Brownie79 · 29/08/2019 14:38

@watersheep no nothing have no idea what to do . I thought I was just being anxious but now I'm not so sure, after seeing the replies on here .

I have a current DBS but in the nhs we require a new one every time we move roles, so wouldn't you need a new one in a school before you started?

IsobelRae23 · 29/08/2019 14:47

As one pp has said, it’s not unusual for jobs to be withdrawn due to budgets and everyone assumes someone else has told you.

Waveysnail · 29/08/2019 14:49

Not unusual for it to be mentioned on last day of term if your support staff in primary around here as much funding relies on children with echp/statements of sen. However I would keep trying to contact the school and pop round to see if anyone is there. I wouldnt want to start on my first day without confirmation

Me either. Hopefully people should be in the school now, if possible I would go in tomorrow to try and sort it out.
