Sorting through mountain of toys?

Following on from my post yesterday about our bedroom situation, I guess my next stop is to sort through the mountain of toys we have taking over our house.

The only real 'sets' of toys they have is an almost complete collection of Peppa pig and ben and holly. A kitchen with a box of food. A box of barbies and clothes. Shopkins/Lol's. Puzzles and a couple of board games/activity books/sets. A box full of paw patrol and Pj masks and then a stand alone drawer set of craft bits.

Other than that it's mostly figurines like Disney characters, bing figures, Masha and the bear, sets from those 'busy books'. Then boxes and boxes of mixed matched random crap. Teddies that have no sentimental value.

By boxes I mean we have the large Ikea Kallax unit with boxes.

How do you deal with this sort of thing. Cull all the little bits? I just have the worry of... 'They haven't played with it for months and months, but what if they might want to at some point'...

It is ridiculous I know! - Writing this I'm also realising how much plastic we have consumed!

I periodically fill a bin bag and stash it in the attic. If DD doesn't notice it's gone within 3 months it goes to the charity shop. Has always worked well and she only ever noticed the absence of one toy

That is a brilliant idea!

We have a large wooden toy box with a closed lid in the front room, they probably open it once a week and get out whatever is on the top. They wouldn't even be able to tell you what was in there. I certainly couldn't!

I often have visions of just moving the whole toy box into the shed and then eventually somewhere else!

put them in a box in a cupboard. If they haven't mentioned said toy missing after X number of months, then take it to charity shop.

How old are the kids?
I do the same as PP, hide it and if not noticed it’s gone
We’ve given stuff to nursery and to be kept at Mil’s. We were given a giant Peppa pig by ILs now my ILs are lovely but I hate Peppa so it stays at theirs.
I periodically get rid of stuff. DD is 4.5 and does ask occasionally. I say “you didn’t play with it so it’s gone to the charity shop” or if she’s in a bad mood I deny all knowledge and hope for the best🙈
Teddies with no value would be gone and little figures I would siphon some off, bag things up for the charity shop. My DD loves shopkins and Lol and if I saw a bag in the charity shop I would buy.

Is there anything they want? Could you get them involved in selling their toys, then they put the profits towards a new toy / tablet / bike or whatever.
