Driving after broken wrist

PerditaMacleod · 28/08/2019 21:45

I broke my wrist a couple of months ago and needed surgery to put in k wires. Next week I will be getting the wires out and cast off.

If you have had the same, how long before you could drive again? I have a toddler and a baby and DH won't be able to drive me around anymore so hoping it'll be a quick recovery!

Those would be useful details to have included Grin

It's my left wrist and my car is manual. Worried that I won't have enough strength to grip the gear stick. Maybe I'll have to rent an automatic for a bit.

I broke my right wrist last year (scaphoid) have an automatic car. The consultant gave me the choice of a cast for 3 weeks - no driving but much quicker healing, or a splint and poss being able to drive but taking ages to heal (subject to insurance). I took the first option, it was really annoying (loan parent) but it healed quickly.
Take advantage of lots of home delivery shopping.
My wrist was OK after 2 weeks of the cast off, back riding my bike carefully. If you don't smoke and do light exercise to get good blood flow to the area healing it will be OK.

Left wrist broken here but I have an auto so drove myself to the hospital when I broke it and drove home once it was plastered. (Not displaced).

You can buy supports with insertable splints that will help while you build up your muscle strength.

Took me about a week to feel ok to drive, 2 weeks b4 I could ride a bike. I had a lot of muscle wastage after painful break & 7.5 weeks in cast. hth

Random post alert but if you can, rent a Mercedes of some variety if you’re renting an auto.

Many of their models have the gear shifter on the right hand side of the steering column.

So you can use your right hand to shift through P, N and D rather than still having to use your left even to set off.

I drove with a support on my broken left wrist but my break was a tiny bone. It was one of those that Velcro’s round and has a metal bit that slips in.
