Neighbours leaving their cat out all night to meow at the door..

For a while now I’ve noticed my neighbours cat meowing through the night to get in. They don’t have a cat flap so it meows, whinges and scratches at the door all night. Their back doorstep is just down On the left of my bedroom and I cannot open my windows in this hot weather as it drives me insane. I’m not sure how they can’t hear it themselves because I noticed their top windows were open. Or are they just ignoring it?

My partner is working until 2am each night this week and is a light sleeper but he keeps getting woke up by the bloody cat. Cats meows can sound really loud during the night when everything else is quiet.

Aibu to have a polite word asking they could possibly fit a cat flap or leave a bottom window open? Or even put a bed in their shed for it to sleep in? Or just let the bloody thing in??

We have a cat flap and the cats still stand at the doors, to be let in or out! A cat’s attitude is

“Why pay to have a dog and bark yourself?”

Cheeserton · 28/08/2019 21:05

YANBU. It's very cruel on the cat, please don't blame her for their fuckwittery. Have a firm word.

catwithnohat · 28/08/2019 21:08

Your neighbour is a tosspot - speak to them about considering a catflap!

Amyheadache · 28/08/2019 21:09

Def agree wit montstmichel our cat howls all night but has the freedom to go anywhere in or out as she pleases. Cats are absolute dicks.

IHaveBrilloHair · 28/08/2019 21:13

Cats are total wankers, one of mine miaows to get in, then out, then in etc.

Bacawill · 28/08/2019 21:14

This exact thing happens to me. From about midnight to 2am next doors cat sits on the fence between our houses and yowls constantly. It drives me mad, especially in the heat when I'd like to have the windows open. Had a word but they aren't bothered as they sleep at the front so can't hear it.

I now sleep with the windows closed, ceiling fan on and ear plugs which work.

Have a word with them and hope they aren't dicks about it. It's so very annoying and I fee for you.

Expressedways · 28/08/2019 21:19

I don’t know it will solve anything because cats can be bastards but I definitely speak to the neighbours about getting a cat flap. Even if it doesn’t solve the howling it just seems cruel to lock the poor cat out all night Sad

PookieDo · 28/08/2019 21:20

These cats make my dog bark at 2am!
I also have a cat so I can officially say they are knobs. Perhaps the cat cries to come in then spends all night crying to go back out!

DullPortraits · 28/08/2019 21:21

We have a cat who has freedom via a very accessible cat flap as and when she chooses: often cries outside windows/ doors to be let in whenever it suits her, she uses the cat flap when she feels like it. We are extremely conscious of her disturbing neighbours particularly in the night and have many broken nights sleep to get her in asap but cats can be stubborn buggers.

Cruel? Don’t be bloody ridiculous. Cats are arseholes. My cat cried 3 times last night to be let inside and each time climbed out of a window to then cry to be let back in again. I have no doubt the neighbours cat is the same type of arsehole.

If it’s disturbing you OP I’d have a polite word and see what they say.

harriethoyle · 28/08/2019 21:24

Another vote for cats being contrary bastards Grin my boy was yowling at back door today, went to let him in and he skipped away after a quick leg twine. Shut the door. Sat down. Yowling started again...
And repeat!

sqirrelfriends · 28/08/2019 21:25

I really hope you're not our neighbour and I'm sorry if it's ours that's been keeping you up! We let our cat out at night and have a window open for him which he is quite happy with in the day. Unfortunately he would rather yowl at us than make his own way in.

He moaned at me earlier because he wanted to leave the living room and have some food. Both doors were wide open...

BananasAreTheSourceOfEvil · 28/08/2019 21:27

Cats are prize bellends. Id have a word but theres probably not much they can do.

lavenderandthyme · 28/08/2019 21:28

Our cat has a catflap. She still miaows under the window because she wants her food and doesn't see why she should have to wait. I worry it disturbs the neighbours. If I rush down to feed her it just encourages her, if I ignore her I worry she's driving the neighbours nuts.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 28/08/2019 21:28

My cat has been known to sit next to her perfectly operational cat flap and howl at me to open the door. She's very lazy. And an arsehole.
But she's also 16 years old. Has trouble making it outside in time to poop. Possibly because she's too lazy to use the bloody cat flap.
I would mention to your neighbors if they seem reasonable. However my neighbor cane over to complain my cat was meowing in the garden - at 5pm. 5pm??!?
She was too lazy to use the darned cat flap.

Onlythelonelywelcome · 28/08/2019 21:29

Perhaps the cat cries to come in then spends all night crying to go back out!
Then they should keep the cat inside and inflict the crying on themselves and not outside on the neighbours.

Cheeserton · 28/08/2019 21:29

Cruel? Don’t be bloody ridiculous.
If there's no access of course it's cruel. By all accounts it's constantly desparate to get in. Many cats use cat flaps provided and these fools don't have one. In any event, if it makes a racket disturbing the neighbours all night they should be keeping it IN! That's not the cat's fault. My cat comes and goes fine without a fuss. Not all cats are as shit as you say.

MonChatEstMagnifique · 28/08/2019 21:35

Some cat owners just put their cat out at night. I've never understood it but they seem to think its what you do. Hmm We had a neighbour like this and I felt so sorry for the cat, she said the cat would poo in the house if she left it in overnight and seemed totally confused when I asked about a litter tray.

You could try having a word but it sounds like they know the poor cat wants in and they're choosing to ignore it.

I'd probably just steal the cat.....joking obviously maybe

PookieDo · 28/08/2019 21:37

Problem with keeping them in all night when they don’t want to be is that they can be destructive and get really agitated. I really struggled to keep my old cat in and she would physically attack you to open the door and scratch all the carpets by the doors. That’s why people let them out at night not because they are inconsiderate arseholes to their neighbours but I would at least speak to them
Just having had cats all my life I know they are total pricks when it comes to doing anything you want them to Grin

PookieDo · 28/08/2019 21:37

My cat also would refuse to use a litter tray indoors once she was no longer a kitten

Cheeserton · 28/08/2019 21:38

but it sounds like they know the poor cat wants in and they're choosing to ignore it.
Sure, which is why they need telling it's not bloody on and is keeping neighbours awake all night.

Posey67 · 28/08/2019 21:38

Another vote here for cats are arseholes. Mine cries all the time to be let in, even wonders down the windowsil staring at you until you get up. We also have a cat flap which the fucker refuses to use. Weve now had to take the door off the flap so he has an even easier access to the house and still cries.

KB197 · 28/08/2019 21:41

Thanks all. I should be a cat lover. My mum was and still is a crazy cat lady (she’s had up to 8) but growing up with numerous cats has made me definitely not wanting one plus my OH is allergic.

I do think it’s the case if not letting it in because they ignore it or oblivious to it. I know they are in. They have young children.

A few mornings ago. The poor cat was meowing to get in from the early hours. It was still meowing when I got up at 6 and when I left the house at around 8am it was around the front way trying to get in 😭 I feel quite sorry for the poor thing!

A while ago the cat in question used to be on our trampoline resting most mornings when it couldn’t get in. It doesn’t come in since getting our dog though and just meows at their window 😢

A cat flap would be ideal imo or an open window!

Cheeserton · 28/08/2019 21:41

Well, if they provide access and it STILL howls outside by a perfectly good catflap, THEN declare it an arsehole. It doesn't have a choice at the moment and obviously wants into the house.

Pardonwhat · 28/08/2019 21:44

Cheeserton
How do you know they’re intentionally locking it out!? Stop being so judgemental
