Mum gave daughter rotten milk

Mum accidentally gave my daughter rotten milk in her cereal. We are about to leave for a 5 hour drive. She’s going to be sick isn’t she? Aibu to make my mum take my daughter in her car so she can deal with it?! So annoyed!

Define "rotten" - did it smell, did it taste bad, was it chunky?

*nobody would willingly give someone "off" milk

Actually, that's a common child abuse tactic, forcing children to eat spoiled food. Not that the OP's mother is an abuser, but, sadly, there are people who would do it willingly.

MonstranceClock · 28/08/2019 16:56

It smelt rancid, was lumpy.

Good bacteria is put into yoghurt isn't it?

sweeneytoddsrazor · 28/08/2019 16:57

How do you know this if she had eaten it all?

Lindy2 · 28/08/2019 16:57

Lumpy milk doesn't taste nice but generally won't do any harm.
Cheese and yogurt are actually off milk.

adaline · 28/08/2019 16:57

If it was that bad, how on earth didn't your mum smell it?

steff13 · 28/08/2019 16:58

Yikes. I don't get how she didn't smell it or see the lumps. Or how your daughter didn't smell it or see the lumps.

MonstranceClock · 28/08/2019 16:59

They’re both clearly idiots Grin

OP posts:
IHaveBrilloHair · 28/08/2019 16:59

She ate it all yet you could smell it?
How?
Anyway, it's not great but unlikely to do her harm and if she's car sick anyway you'll have the kit to deal with it presumably.

CTRL · 28/08/2019 17:01

I have my son lumpy milk by accident once and he ate half the bowl before I realised. I was expecting him to be sick but he wasn’t. He was fine. He was young aswell like 3

QuestionableMouse · 28/08/2019 17:02

@Lindy2 no they aren't. They're a processed form of milk using specific strains of yeast or bacteria. Not just left to go bad like out of date milk!

MonstranceClock · 28/08/2019 17:03

Ok I’m hoping she will be ok. I have quite bad morning sickness and know her being sick in the car will probably make me be sick too and I cba with it.

@singlenotsingle

Yoghourt, you mean?

Mm, no. Most milk is pasteurised so it can't actually ferment into yogurt. When it goes bad, it just rots. It's a different beast.

I remember my grandparents also giving us off milk as a kid - they hadn't noticed either. It does happen.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 28/08/2019 17:05

But she is car sick anyway so she was always going to be sick lumpy milk or not.

PalmPrint · 28/08/2019 17:05

Goodness me. The Spanish Inquisition over the milk and whether it was really off or not, and how did the OP know it was off if it had all been eaten etc etc. Just accept what the OP is saying and answer accordingly.

I once drank a mouthful of gone off milk. It tasted foul but didn't cause an upset tummy.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 28/08/2019 17:06

Do you carry bicarb of soda to soak up the smell till the end of the journey? I did that when I had a sick-in-the-car toddler, and it really did work, only you have to remember about it or it bleaches the seat where you sprinkled it.

MonstranceClock · 28/08/2019 17:07

I’m asking if she will be sick because I will delay the journey if this is the case. I’ve not experienced this problem before.

OP posts:
MonstranceClock · 28/08/2019 17:07

I didn’t know that about the bicarbonate. Thankyou.

OP posts:
sweeneytoddsrazor · 28/08/2019 17:10

You said she gets car sick anyway, so a 5 hour journey is very likely to result in sickness whatever time you go.

TequilaMockingbird0 · 28/08/2019 17:10

I think a bigger issue is that your mum 'made her eat it all'. I wouldn't be happy with anyone forcing my child to eat or finish a meal they didn't want to.

MonstranceClock · 28/08/2019 17:11

Just because she gets car sick anyway doesn’t mean I want to increase her discomfort.

OP posts:
MonstranceClock · 28/08/2019 17:12

Yeah my mums really weird with food. I didn’t think she could fuck up a bowl of cocopops though.

OP posts:
diddl · 28/08/2019 17:14

So it wasn't an accident if your daughter said it tasted strange but your mum made her finish it?

How did your mum not notice the lumps as she poured it?

CustardySergeant · 28/08/2019 17:14

I feel so sorry for your daughter that your mother made her eat it all. Has your mother apologised to both of you?

diddl · 28/08/2019 17:17

Did your mum make you eat/drink obviously bad stuff then Op?
