To find an alternative to bar soap but with minimal plastic?

Hi looking for some tips please.
Trying to reduce our plastic use, but my autistic son can't bear the feel of bars of soap on his hands or skin or the fact it has been on other people etc. He'd literally not wash his hands if there is only a bar of soap available. So we use liquid hand soap and shower gel. He uses a body puff thing so doesn't use too much shower gel so it lasts a while.

Are there any alternatives to bars of soap/solid shower gel as that's the same principle he won't touch it. I heard some people mention refillable shower gels/shampoos, but where do you go for this? I haven't seen anywhere near me that does this?

It is a sensory issue and he can't get past it. He does love animals and cares about the environment, always helps recycle things. I finally got him to accept reusable drinking straws as he can't drink without one and I've bought him a metal water bottle and tin lunch containers for school. He walks or cycles to school and we recycle everything possible and donate all outgrown clothes/shoes/toys to charity shops. We have stopped eating red meat and only eat chicken/turkey twice a week max and have been using oat and almond milks. Just conscious of doing all we can so would appreciate any suggestions.

@Fullyhuman I never really go into London lol! I went once last year to the theatre but that was at nighttime and the year before that I went once to go to natural history museum but that was as a parent helper on a school trip lol so it would mean making a specific trip and carrying a load of stuff back Grin and I would have a big uphill walk for 1.5 miles home from the station!

LUSH have soaps and gels with no packaging op if that's any help at all?🌻

Thank you, I cannot abide bar soap, it goes all scummy and makes me wretch, I've been trying to find an environmentally friendly option for liquid soap for ages.. I'm going to look at splosh :)

Cryalot2 · 29/08/2019 10:02

Pamolive and a few others do refill pouches. We buy them at Poundland or poundstrechers .
Never heard of Splosh .

ItchySeveredFoot · 29/08/2019 10:06

What do the splosh refills come in?

Another idea for the mix you could use them in a much cheaper hand soap dispenser.

We use Splosh as well. Very happy with the service

SaltedCaramelEverything · 29/08/2019 10:20

Another question about splash! What material are the refill pouches made of? It’s not clear on their website. Can they be recycled?

flairyfairy · 29/08/2019 10:31

Re Splosh, if you send back the refill containers (in the boxes they come in) they are 97% recycled.

modgepodge · 29/08/2019 10:39

Just looked at the splosh refills - it’s not clear but I’d imagine it’s plastic. However you send them back to splosh once you’ve got 8 empty refills and they reprocess them so the plastic waste is almost 0. I’m very happy with the splosh products I’ve used so far.

jimmyhill · 29/08/2019 10:53

This is a perfectly reasonable reason to use plastic bottles (which are generally recyclable!)

Stop beating yourself up over it

FlibbertigibbetArmadillo · 29/08/2019 14:00

Any local Farmer's markets nearby?
I'm in Kent (but probably half hour drive from Dartford) and our local monthly one now has a stall selling liquid soap etc and will fill whatever container you bring them.

TooMinty · 29/08/2019 14:03

What if you got him his own bar of soap and shampoo in distinctive tins and said no one else was allowed to use them? Or would he still struggle with texture?

Thethingswedoforlove · 29/08/2019 14:06

Another vote for splosh. If you use the code IHMYSP56WU you shd get 15% off

Thethingswedoforlove · 29/08/2019 14:07

I have only started using them recently but the products seem v good and the service is excellent.
